The Labor Supply of Married Women: Why Does It Differ across U.s. Cities?
نویسنده
چکیده
Using Census Public Use Micro Sample (PUMS) data for 1980, 1990 and 2000, this paper documents a little-noticed feature of U.S. labor markets—that there is wide variation in the labor market participation rates and annual work hours of white married women across urban areas. This variation is also large among sub-groups, including women with children and those with different levels of education. Among the explanations for this variation one emerges as particularly important: married women’s labor force participation decisions appear to be very responsive to commuting times. There is a strong empirical evidence demonstrating that labor force participation rates of married women are negatively correlated with commuting time. What is more, the analysis shows that metropolitan areas which experienced relatively large increases in average commuting time between 1980 and 2000 also had slower growth of labor force participation of married women. This feature of local labor markets may have important implications for policy and for further research. JEL: J21, J22, R23, R41.

Why do so few women work in New York (and so many in Minneapolis)? Labor supply of married women across US cities ¬リニ
This paper documents a little-noticed feature of US labor markets—very large variation in the labor supply of married women across cities. We focus on cross-city differences in commuting times as a potential explanation for this variation. We start with a model in which commuting times introduce non-convexities into the budget set. Empirical evidence is consistent with the model’s predictions: ...

Is there a causal connection between house prices and labor force participation of married women? The simple correlation between house prices and married women’s labor force participation across U.S. metro areas is positive. Plausible, informal arguments have been advanced to support causation in either direction: prices raising participation (negative income effects of higher house prices lead...

Using 2000 U.S. Census data we illustrate the importance of accounting for household specialization in lesbian couples when examining the sexual orientation gap in female labor supply. The major objective of this study is to evaluate the results of previous studies of the labor supply and completed fertility of married women which used group (by SMSA) cross-sectional data from the 1940, 1950, and 1960 u.S. Censuses. Generalized Least Squares is used to estimate a two-equation model for five-year, age-of-wife cohorts (between ages 30 and 54) for both. the non-Spanish white and...
متن کاملTaxation and Labor Supply of Married Couples across Countries: A Macroeconomic Analysis
We document contemporaneous differences in the aggregate labor supply of married couples across 18 OECD countries. Relative to their US counterparts, European married men work on average 9 to 17 percent, and married women in Western and Southern Europe 26 and 31 percent fewer hours. Married women in Scandinavia and Eastern Europe however work almost as many hours as US married women. We find th...
