چکیده

Changes in species richness and productivity in a Mediterranean dwarf-shrub community were documented during 5 years following treatments intended to improve soil fertility and reduce shrub cover. Five treatments, replicated five times, were tested: (a) shrub cover reduction by selective herbicide application; (b) application of medium levels of phosphorus; (c) application of high doses of phosphorus; (d) a combined herbicide and phosphorus application; (e) an untreated control. Species were classified into nine functional groups according to life cycle, growth form and taxonomy: trees, shrubs, climbers, geophytes, perennial and annual grasses, annual legumes, perennial and annual forbs. The perennial and annual grasses, climbers, perennial forbs and geophytes showed no significant response to any treatment. Phosphorus application significantly increased the productivity and the richness of annual legume species, while herbicide treatment significantly reduced the frequency and richness of shrubs and increased those of annual forbs. Greater biomass production did not lead to a decrease in species richness; on the contrary, it was positively related to greater species richness, especially of the legume component. # 2005 Elsevier B.V. Relationships between Species Diversity and Biomass in Mountainous Habitats in Zagros Rangeland (Case Study: Baneh, Kurdistan, Iran)

Species diversity, richness and biomasses (aboveground biomass) and their relationships are the key variables of ecosystems. This study was conducted to determine the relationship of Species Diversity (SD) and Species Richness (SR) with Above-Ground Biomass (AGB) at a local scale at 5 different habitats (shrubland, forbland, grassland, shrub-forbland and forb-shrubland) in Zagros mountains in w...

Effect of shrub type on species diversity and richness of soil seed bank in semiarid regions (case study: Chenarnaz rangelands, Khatam city, Yazd province)

Soil seed bank can facilitate natural regeneration of rangeland ecosystems. This bank is usually influenced by local plant species. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of canopy cover of three shrubs (Amygdalus scoparia, Daphne mezereum and Ebenus stellata) on the diversity and richness of soil seed bank under their canopies in Chenarnaz rangelands, Khatam city, Yazd province. Fi...

Plant Species and Functional Types’ Diversity in Relation to Grazing in Arid and Semi-arid Rangelands, Khabr National Park, Iran

In arid and semi-arid rangelands, grazing as one of the natural or human induced processes has direct and indirect effects on structure and dynamics of plant community and ecosystems. A study was done to analyze the effects of grazing on plant species diversity and Plant Functional Types‘ (PFTs) diversity of arid and semi-arid rangelands. We analyzed plant richness and diversity data from 75 sa...

Vegetation characteristics of four ecological zones of Iran

Environmental (topography, climate) features have an important influence on plant diversity and richness of Iran. Topography is from –28m which is close to Caspian Sea to 5678m which is located on the Alborz Mountain. Two mountains (Alborz and Zagrosss) prevent moist air moving to the centre of Iran. On the basis of environmental factors, four ecological zones with specific plant richness from ...

Local immigration, competition from dominant guilds, and the ecological assembly of high-diversity pine savannas.

In high-diversity communities, rare species encounter one another infrequently and therefore may compete more intensely with common species or guilds for limiting space and resources. In addition, rare species may be strongly recruitment limited because of their low abundances. Under these conditions, stochastic dispersal and immigration history can have an important influence on community stru...
