چکیده

The full operational capability of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) interferometry in deformation monitoring has not been achieved yet due to the negative influences of spatio-temporal decorrelation and atmospheric delay. With the use of time series of SAR images, deformation extraction can be however improved by only tracking some objects with steady radar reflectivity, generally referred to as permanent scatterer (PS). This paper presents an attempt to explore a PS-networking approach to isolate deformations from other effects such as atmospheric signals and topographic errors. The deforming process in time and space is modelled and estimated with a very strong network which is formed by connecting adjacent PSs. The linear deformations and topographic errors are estimated by optimizing objective functions and by adjusting the network via weighted least squares (LS) solution. The time series of nonlinear deformations and atmospheric signals are computed by singular value decomposition (SVD) and empirical mode decomposition (EMD). To validate the algorithm, 39 ERS C-band SAR images acquired over Phoenix in Arizona (USA) from 1992 to 2002 are used to detect land subsidence caused by the excessive groundwater withdrawal. * Corresponding author.

Study of subsidence of Abarkooh plain of Yazd using the Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry method

Abstract The population growth, the development of cities, industry, agriculture, and improper use of resources especially non-renewable resources have led human beings to face the danger of running out of resources. In some cases, in addition to the above, irreversible environmental and geological hazards have occurred due to the overdrawn of resources. Over extraction of groundwater resourc...

Multi-interferogram method for measuring interseismic deformation: Denali Fault, Alaska

S U M M A R Y Studies of interseismic strain accumulation are crucial to our understanding of continental deformation, the earthquake cycle and seismic hazard. By mapping small amounts of ground deformation over large spatial areas, InSAR has the potential to produce continental-scale maps of strain accumulation on active faults. However, most InSAR studies to date have focused on areas where t...

Atmospheric phase screen correction in ground-based SAR with PS technique

Ground-based synthetic aperture radar (GBSAR) is a powerful tool used in monitoring structures, such as bridges and dams. However, despite the extremely short range of GBSAR interferometry, the atmosphere effects cannot be neglected. The permanent scatterer technique is an effective operational tool that utilizes a long series of SAR data and detects information with high accuracy. An algorithm...

A multi-temporal InSAR method incorporating both persistent scatterer and small baseline approaches

[1] Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) interferometry is a technique that provides high-resolution measurements of the ground displacement associated with many geophysical processes. Advanced techniques involving the simultaneous processing of multiple SAR acquisitions in time increase the number of locations where a deformation signal can be extracted and reduce associated error. Currently there a...
