Modeling of patient-specific three semicircular canals

چکیده
The semicircular canals (SCC) are fluid-filled inner ear structures designed to detect circular or angular motion. In this study we modeled three-dimensional biomechanical model of SCC and compared results with real patient case for the Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) disease. The model consists of full 3D fluid-structure interaction incorporating particles, wall, cupula deformation and endolymph fluid flow. Full Navier-Stokes equations and continuity equations are used for fluid domain with Arbitrary-Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) formulation for mesh motion. For cupula deformation with fluid coupling, fluid-structure interaction is used. The numerical results are compared with real experiment for BPPV test and cupula deformation for head manoeuvre from 0 to 30°. The results could be used for better understanding of BPPV disease diagnosis.

Central versus peripheral origin of vestibuloocular reflex recovery following semicircular canal plugging in rhesus monkeys.
We have previously shown that there is a slowly progressing, frequency-specific recovery of the gain and phase of the horizontal vestibuloocular reflex (VOR) in rhesus monkeys following plugging of the lateral semicircular canals. The adapted VOR response exhibited both dynamic and spatial characteristics that were distinctly different from responses in intact animals. To discriminate between a...

SUMMARY Although sciences and techniques have been significantly developed, many patients are still suffering from diagnostic and therapeutic problems of vestibular system, specially vertigo. Perhaps, these problems are not solved yet mostly because the neurophysiology of vestibular system and the stimulation mechanisms of the receptors are not known. This difficulty, intum, causes some a mbig...
متن کاملVestibulo-Ocular Reflex Abnormalities in Posterior Semicircular Canal Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo: A Pilot Study
Introduction: Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), involving the semicircular canals, is one of the most common diseases of the inner ear. The video head impulse test (vHIT) is a new test that examines the function of the canals. This study aimed to investigate the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) gain, gain asymmetry and saccades after stimulating all six canals in patients definitively d...
متن کاملThe dimensions and sensitivities of semicircular canals.
With this definition it is possible to compare the mechanical sensitivities of all semicircular canals. For this purpose three different approaches seem feasible. (1) The effect of growth of one particular semicircular canal on G in one species. (2) Comparison of values of G for the three semicircular canals in one species. (3) Comparison of values of G of the horizontal canal in different spec...
متن کاملVestibular apparatus: dynamic model of the semicircular canals
The vestibular apparatus plays a fundamental role in equilibrioception. It is located in the inner ear and it substantially comprises otoliths, which indicate linear acceleration, and semicircular canals, which detect rotational acceleration. In this paper models of different complexity of the semicircular canals are reported and discussed: a monocanal hydro-elastic model and a three-canals mod...
