چکیده
We model a rm's decisions about product innovation, focusing on the extent to which features should be improved or changed in the succession of models that comprise a life cycle. We show that the structure of revenues and costs can suggest when a rm should pursue radical innovation. We use the criterion of maximizing the expected present value of pro ts during the life cycle. Computational studies complement the theoretical results and lead to insights about when to bundle innovations across features. The formalization was in uenced by extensive interviews with managers in a high technology rm that dominates its industry.

Technical Memorandum Number 720 Radical Innovation for Multi - Dimensional Technologies by Kathy A . Paulson Gjerde Susan A . Slotnick Matthew J . Sobel
We model a firm’s decisions about product innovation, focusing on the extent to which features should be improved or changed in the succession of models that comprise a life cycle. We show that the structure of revenues and costs can suggest when a firm should pursue radical rather than incremental innovation. متن کاملThe Existence of Gender-Specific Promotion Standards in the U.S
This paper is motivated by the claim that promotion probabilities are lower for women than men. Using data from the 1984 and 1989 National Longitudinal Youth Surveys, this paper tests this claim and two related hypotheses concerning training and ability. It is found that females are less likely to be promoted than males, and females receive less training than males. The relationship between pro...

W e model a firm's decisions about product innovation, focusing on the extent to which features should be improved or changed in the succession of models that comprise a life cycle. We show that the structure of the internal and external environment in which a firm operates suggests when to innovate to the technology frontier. The criterion is maxi-mization of the expected present value of prof...
متن کاملCIRCULATION COPY: PLEASE DO NOT QUOTE Quality and Reputation: The Effects of External and Internal Factors over Time
We model a firm’s decisions about quality investment under differing external (market) and internal (cost and revenue) environments. We find that costs and benefits of expending resources on quality improvement depend on the price and quality profiles of competitors, the persistence of reputation in the marketplace, the relative efficacy of quality improvement efforts and the degree to which th...
