چکیده

Introduction: Recent significant progress in hyperpolarized (HP) noble gas MRI has made it possible to exploit a novel method of evaluating lung function or structure and to have a deep understanding of lung physiological changes. Xe has inherent features of high solubility in lung tissues and large chemical shift distribution. It has been shown that measurement of recovery process of dissolved-phase Xe signal after pre-saturation, which is related to the diffusion of Xe from gas space to tissue, is extremely useful for evaluating various physiological parameters. In the present study, a chemical shift saturation recovery (CSSR) method suggested by Patz et al [1] is applied to spontaneously breathing mice, and an attempt is made to detect physiological changes encountered in emphysema model mice.

Comprehensive Pulmonary Evaluation of Emphysematous Mice using Hyperpolarized Xe MRI/MRS under Spontaneous Breathing Mode

Introduction: Hyperpolarized (HP) noble gas MRI and MRS in the lungs on spontaneous breathing mice is expected as a valuable modality for drug discovery or development of the methods for evaluating physiological changes. Since the measurements under the spontaneous breathing condition are fully non-invasive protocol without using mechanical ventilation, this technique allows a long-term and the...

Pulmonary ventilation visualized using hyperpolarized helium-3 and xenon-129 magnetic resonance imaging: differences in COPD and relationship to emphysema.

In subjects with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), hyperpolarized xenon-129 ((129)Xe) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) reveals significantly greater ventilation defects than hyperpolarized helium-3 ((3)He) MRI. The physiological and/or morphological determinants of ventilation defects and the differences observed between hyperpolarized (3)He and (129)Xe MRI are not yet understood. H...

Lung MRI with trueFISP on Spontaneous Breathing Mice by Means of Continuous Delivery of Xe Gas Polarized under Low Pressure

Introduction: The hyperpolarized (HP) noble gas MRI on mice is expected as an extremely valuable modality in studies of drug discovery because of the easy access to genetically engineered species as well as various disease models. In these studies, a non-invasive protocol that allows a long-term and repeated measurements on the same individual may be required, which will be realized by the use ...

3D Hyperpolarized (129)Xe MRI of mouse lung at low xenon concentration using a continuous flow-type hyperpolarizing system: feasibility for quantitative measurement of regional ventilation.

PURPOSE We investigated the feasibility of 3D hyperpolarized (HP) (129)Xe magnetic resonance (MR) imaging at an extremely low concentration of HP (129)Xe supplied from a continuous flow-type hyperpolarizing (CF-HP) system and established a standard procedure for measuring regional lung ventilation of small animals, such as the mouse, as a baseline for further studies. MATERIALS AND METHODS We...

Quantification of lung microstructure with hyperpolarized 3He diffusion MRI.

The structure and integrity of pulmonary acinar airways and their changes in different diseases are of great importance and interest to a broad range of physiologists and clinicians. The introduction of hyperpolarized gases has opened a door to in vivo studies of lungs with MRI. In this study we demonstrate that MRI-based measurements of hyperpolarized (3)He diffusivity in human lungs yield qua...
