A Systematic Survey on Different Topographic Correction Techniques for Rugged Terrain Satellite Imagery
نویسنده
چکیده
In remote sensed data, topographic corrections are very important to overcome the topographic effects such as shadow effects. These topographic effects occurs especially in case of rugged terrain because sun facing slope represents maximum reflectance values and opposite side slope represents minimum reflectance values. These topographic effects leads to an inaccurate classification into different land cover classes due to different topographic angles. Therefore, effective removal or minimization of topographic effects is necessary in satellite imagery data of rugged terrain to extract the maximum information. Different topographic correction techniques have been developed to reduce topographical effects but each topographic technique has a different impact in different situation. In paper report, all recently developed different topographic correction techniques for land use/cover have been discussed with their feature and limitation for rugged terrain. Further research with comparative analysis of each method is needed on a global basis to derive guidelines on which method performs best under which situation.

Evaluation of Satellite Image Correction Methods Caused by Differential Terrain Illumination
The problem due to differential terrain illumination on satellite imagery is experienced by most of areas which are on mountainous terrain. This may cause variations in reflectance of similar ground features which lead to a misclassification of land cover classes due to different topographic positions. This phenomenon most commonly occurred in the areas which are located on southern and norther...

DEM-based topographic corrections on Landsat-7 ETM+ imagery from rugged terrain, as an effective processing techniques to improve the accuracy of Land Use/Land Cover (LULC) classification as well as land surface parameter retrievals with remotely sensed data, has been frequently reported in the literature. However, few studies have investigated the exact effects of DEM with different resolution...
متن کاملA Model of Topographic Correction and Reflectance Retrieval for Optical Satellite Data in Forested Areas
Topographic correction is a necessary step of pre-process in the remote sensing application in rugged terrain. Most of traditional topographic correction methods are empirical and statistical based. These methods have the advantage of facility; however they also have some disadvantages, such as lack of comprehensive physical analysis, subjectivity in operation, separation of atmospheric correct...
متن کاملTopographic Normalization in Rugged Terrain
Remote sensing of rugged terrain is hampered by topographic effects on spectral signatures. The purpose of this study was to attempt normalization of the topographic effect encountered when analyzing Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) imagery in the Rocky Mountains. Two normalization techniques were performed on a subscene of a TM image of Rocky Mountain National Park. The first technique was a band ...
متن کاملTopographic Correction for Differential Illumination Effects on Ikonos Satellite Imagery
The problem of differential terrain illumination on satellite imagery has been investigated for at least 20 years and has not been solved satisfactorily. Most past research has been conducted on Landsat imagery where the look angle is nadir. There is no research on topographic correction of IKONOS imagery, which has a higher spatial resolution. The high spatial resolution of IKONOS imagery requ...
