The Influence of Acidosis on Carbohydrate Metabolism.

In 19'22 it was demonstrated by Kaguera' that dogs given a high-fat diet over a certain period of time, showed an abnormal rise in the blood sugar after a glucose meal; and Southwood9 in 1923 reported similar results in men who had been given a carbohydrate-free diet for 36 hours previous to the test. Numerous other investigators have confirmed these results, and how striking this hyperglyc~emia can be has been demonstrated by me in a previous paper3. This reduction in sugar tolerance occurs not only with a carbohydrate-free diet, but also if the subject is deprived of all food; and Severinghaus4 has found that after fasting for 48 hours the ingestion of glucose resulted in a blood-sugar reaction resembling that obtained in a mild case of diabetes mellitus.
