A CALL system using speech recognition to train the pronunciation of Japanese long vowels, the mora nasal and mora obstruents

چکیده
We developed a CALL (computer-aided language learning) system for teaching the pronunciation of Japanese long vowels, the mora nasal and mora obstruents to nonnative speakers of Japanese. Long vowels and short vowels are spectrally almost identical but their phone durations differ significantly. Similar conditions exist between mora nasals and non-mora nasals, and between mora and non-mora obstruents. Our system uses speech recognition to measure the durations of each phone and compares them with distributions of native speakers while correcting for different speech rates. Results show that learners quickly capture the relevant duration cues. The amount of learning time spent on acquiring these durational skills is well within the time constraints of TJSL (teaching Japanese as a second language) curricula.

This paper describes a system for Japanese spoken language learning using Java information technology (IT). The system is automatically evaluated Japanese speech uttered by trainee as computer assisted language learning (CALL) on the Internet. For the Internet, the system can be used at any time, in anywhere and for anyone so that it is very suitable for busy learners in the world. Phonetically...
متن کاملPhoneme Duration Sensitivity in L2 Adaptation in Japanese –Phonological Parsing Rules in Different Phonological Units
This study investigated Japanese speakers’ second language (L2) phonological adaptation processes by examining the production of L2 with particular reference to speech rhythm and timing. In addition it examined the effectiveness of proposed L2 phonological adaptation rules in different prosodic units, namely word and phrase. Languages use different prosodic units to maintain their speech rhythm...
متن کاملVowel devoicing vs. mora-timed rhythm in spontaneous Japanese - inspection of phonetic labels of OGI_TS
This paper discusses two well-known phonetic-phonological phenomena of Japanese, vowel devoicing and mora-timed rhythm. Regarding vowel devoicing as a process of vowels getting consonantal, it may change the mora-templated syllable structures of Japanese, resulting in the deviation from mora-timed rhythm. To investigate spontaneous Japanese with comparison to other languages, the label data of ...
متن کاملContinuous Speech Recognition of Japanese Using Prosodic Word Boundaries Detected by Mora Transition Modeling of Fundamental Frequency Contours
An HMM-based method of detecting prosodic word boundaries was developed for Japanese continuous speech and was successfully integrated into a mora-basis continuous speech recognition system with two stages operating without and with prosodic information. The method is based on modeling the fundamental frequency (F0) contour of input speech as transitions of mora-unit F0 contours and operates af...
