Larch Forests of Middle Siberia : Long - Term Trends in Fire Return Intervals 1 2

چکیده
Fire history within the northern larch forests of Central Siberia was studied (65+°N). Fires within 19 this area are predominantly caused by lightning strikes rather than human activity. Mean fire return intervals (FRI) 20 were found to be 112 ± 49 years (based on fire scars) and 106 ± 36 years (based on fire scars and tree natality dates). 21 FRI were increased with latitude increase, and observed to be about 80 years at 64°N, about 200 years near the 22 Arctic Circle, and about 300 years nearby the northern range limit of larch stands (~71°+N). Northward FRI 23 increase correlated with incoming solar radiation (r = 0.95). Post Little Ice Age (LIA) warming (after 1850) caused 24 approximately a doubling of fire events (in comparison with a similar period during LIA). The data obtained support 25 a hypothesis of climate-induced fire frequency increase. 26 27

متن کاملWildfires Dynamics in Siberian Larch Forests
Wildfire number and burned area temporal dynamics within all of Siberia and along a south-north transect in central Siberia (45 ̋–73 ̋ N) were studied based on NOAA/AVHRR (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration/ Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer) and Terra/MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) data and field measurements for the period 1996–2015. In addition, fire ...
متن کاملCajander larch (Larix cajanderi) biomass distribution, fire regime and post-fire recovery in northeastern Siberia
Climate change and land-use activities are increasing fire activity across much of the Siberian boreal forest, yet the climate feedbacks from forest disturbances remain difficult to quantify due to limited information on forest biomass distribution, disturbance regimes and post-disturbance ecosystem recovery. Our primary objective here was to analyse post-fire accumulation of Cajander larch (La...
متن کاملEffects of climate and fire on short-term vegetation recovery in the boreal larch forests of Northeastern China
Understanding the influence of climate variability and fire characteristics in shaping postfire vegetation recovery will help to predict future ecosystem trajectories in boreal forests. In this study, I asked: (1) which remotely-sensed vegetation index (VI) is a good proxy for vegetation recovery? and (2) what are the relative influences of climate and fire in controlling postfire vegetation re...
متن کاملRecruitment of Larix sibirica Ledeb. in Closed Forest Stands, on Clear-Felling Sites and at Fire- Sites in the Forests of Mongolia
The paper deals with recruitment patterns in larch forests of Mongolia following anthropogenic impacts (felling, fires), and describes successional trends in highland forest communities. It is established that mass seed recruitment of Larix sibirica LEdEb. took place during anomalous combinations of hydrothermal conditions supposedly occurring at periods of about 100 years. During the last deca...
