Metamorphism of basement rocks in the Central Zone of the North China Craton: implications for Paleoproterozoic tectonic evolution

چکیده
Lithological, structural, metamorphic and geochronological data for the North China Craton enable its division into the Western and Eastern Blocks of Archean to Paleoproterozoic age separated by a north–south trending Paleoproterozoic orogenic belt: the Central Zone. The Central Zone is divisible into a series of lowto medium-grade granite–greenstone belts and high-grade metamorphic terrains containing reworked Archean material and late Archean to Paleoproterozoic juvenile igneous and sedimentary rocks which developed in intra-continental magmatic arc and intra-arc basin environments bordering the western margin of the Eastern Block. The basement rocks from the Central Zone, regardless of their protolith age, composition and metamorphic grade, record a metamorphic history characterized by nearly isothermal decompression (M2) and then retrogressive cooling (M3) following peak metamorphism (M1). The decompression textures are represented by worm-like hypersthene+plagioclase symplectites or clinopyroxene+orthopyroxene+plagioclase coronas in mafic granulites, hornblende/cummingtonite+plagioclase symplectites in amphibolites, and cordierite coronas and cordierite+orthopyroxene or cordierite+spinel symplectites in pelitic rocks. The cooling textures are shown by hornblende+plagioclase symplectites in mafic granulites, chlorite+epidote+mica retrogressive rims around garnet or hornblende grains in amphibolites, and biotite+Kfeldspar9muscovite9magnetite replacing garnet, cordierite and sillimanite in pelitic gneisses. These textural relations and their P–T estimates define near-isothermal decompressional clockwise P–T paths, which, in combination with lithological, structural and geochronological constraints, are in accord with collision between the Eastern and Western Blocks of the North China Craton at 1.8 Ga. © 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. U–Pb geochronological constraints for Paleoproterozoic evolution of the Core Zone, southeastern Churchill Province, northeastern Laurentia
The Core Zone of the Southeastern Churchill Province, northeastern Laurentia, is a composite of Paleoproterozoic lithotectonic domains assembled in the vise between obliquely colliding Archean Superior and North Atlantic cratons between ca. 1860 and 1810 Ma. Detailed geological and U–Pb geochronological studies of domains in the southern Core Zone highlight significant differences in Archean an...
متن کاملPaleoproterozoic high-pressure metamorphism in the northern North China Craton and implications for the Nuna supercontinent
The connection between the North China Craton (NCC) and contiguous cratons is important for the configuration of the Nuna supercontinent. Here we document a new Paleoproterozoic high-pressure (HP) complex dominated by garnet websterite on the northern margin of the NCC. The peak metamorphism of the garnet websterite was after ∼1.90 Ga when it was subducted to eclogite facies at ∼2.4 GPa, then e...

The Northern Dabie Complex in east central China lies between the Sino–Korean plate to the north and the Yangtze plate to the south. The Northern Dabie Complex has been variously proposed to represent a Paleozoic magmatic arc on the Sino–Korean plate, an exhumed piece of subducted Yangtze plate crust, or crust produced almost entirely by Cretaceous extension-related magmatism. Trace element com...

The upper part of Shirgesht (UPS) and lower part of Niur (LPN) formations (Ordovician-Silurian) consist of sandstone, shale and limestone, respectively. The petrography and geochemical analysis conducted to evaluate provenance of siliciclastic deposits in order to understand the paleogeography of Central Iran during the Early Paleozoic time. This study shows that quartz and K-feldspar are the m...
متن کاملU–Pb evidence of 1.7 Ga crustal tectonism during the Nimrod Orogeny in the Transantarctic Mountains, Antarctica: implications for Proterozoic plate reconstructions
The Pacific margin of East Antarctica records a long tectonic history of crustal growth and breakup, culminating in the early Paleozoic Ross Orogeny associated with Gondwanaland amalgamation. Periods of older tectonism have been proposed (e.g. Precambrian Nimrod and Beardmore Orogenies), but the veracity of these events is difficult to document because of poor petrologic preservation, geochrono...
