چکیده

We trace the development of the technical ideas showing that the Second Law of Thermodynamics became, over a Century ago, a general principle of reasoning, applicable to scienti c inference in other elds than thermodynamics. Both the logic and the procedure of our present maximum entropy applications are easily recognized in the methods for predicting equilibrium conditions introduced by Gibbs in 1875. Chemical thermodynamics has been based on them ever since. What is new in this eld is not the method, but the recognition of its generality.

2 00 3 The comparsion principle for viscosity solutions of fully nonlinear subelliptic equations in Carnot groups

For any Carnot group G and a bounded domain Ω ⊂ G, we prove that viscosity solutions in C(Ω̄) of the fully nonlinear subelliptic equation F (u,∇hu,∇ 2 hu) = 0 are unique when F ∈ C(R×R×S(m)) satisfies (i) F is degenerate subelliptic and decreasing in u or (ii) F is uniformly subelliptic and nonincreasing in u. This extends Jensen’s uniqueness theorem from the Euclidean space to the sub-Riemannia...

Generalized Mean Curvature Flow in Carnot Groups

In this paper we study the generalized mean curvature flow of sets in the sub-Riemannian geometry of Carnot groups. We extend to our context the level sets method and the weak (viscosity) solutions introduced in the Euclidean setting in [29] and [14]. We establish two special cases of the comparison principle, existence, uniqueness and basic geometric properties of the flow.

Squeezed Thermal Reservoirs as a Resource for a Nanomechanical Engine beyond the Carnot Limit

The efficient conversion of thermal energy to mechanical work by a heat engine is an ongoing technological challenge. Since the pioneering work of Carnot, it has been known that the efficiency of heat engines is bounded by a fundamental upper limit—the Carnot limit. Theoretical studies suggest that heat engines may be operated beyond the Carnot limit by exploiting stationary, nonequilibrium res...

Role of the superposition principle for enhancing the efficiency of the quantum-mechanical Carnot engine.

The role of the superposition principle is discussed for the quantum-mechanical Carnot engine introduced by Bender, Brody, and Meister [J. Phys. A 33, 4427 (2000)]. It is shown that the efficiency of the engine can be enhanced by the superposition of quantum states. A finite-time process is also discussed and the condition of the maximum power output is presented. Interestingly, the efficiency ...

Size Evolution Study of the Electronic and Magnetic Properties of MgO Nanoclusters

Magnesium oxide nanoclusters have attracted much attention due to their potential applications to catalysis and novel optoelectronic materials. In the present study, we have studied the electronic and magnetic properties of the stoichiometric magnesium oxide nanoclusters (MgO)n  for n = 2-20. Although the binding energy increases with the size of the cluster, it  re...
