چکیده

Age and growth analysis is essential to fisheries management. Indirect methods to calculate growth are widely used; however, length frequency data analysis in sea cucumbers is complicated by high data variability caused by body wall elasticity. Here we calculated Isostichopus badionotus parameters of the von Bertalanffy growth function. In order to address bias produced by body wall elasticity, we compared the performance of four measurements and one compound index that combines different biometric parameters: the square root of the length-width product (SLW). Results showed that variability in length data due to body wall elasticity was controlled by using body length (Le) from the SLW compound index. Growth in I. badionotus follows a negative allometric tendency. Slow or zero growth periods were observed during October and November, when weather conditions were adverse.

Correction: Diets Containing Sea Cucumber (Isostichopus badionotus) Meals Are Hypocholesterolemic in Young Rats

Sea cucumber is widely consumed as a putative functional food. It contains many biologically-active substances, but only limited research on its properties in vivo has been done. The effects of different meals containing Isostichopus badionotus, a sea cucumber from southeast Mexico, on growth performance and body lipid profile in young rats were analyzed. Sea cucumber body wall was either lyoph...

Population Structure, Distribution and Abundance of Three Commercial Species of Sea Cucumber (Echinodermata) in Panama

—Overfishing due to high demand in Asian markets, have encouraged illegal fisheries of sea cucumbers in non-traditional areas of the tropical Caribbean. This work assesses the population structure, distribution, and abundance of three commercially important Caribbean species (Isostichopus badionotus, Holothuria mexicana, and Astichopus multifidus) in 47 158 hectares of shallow habitats in Bocas...

Effect of pH on temperature controlled degradation of reactive oxygen species, heat shock protein expression, and mucosal immunity in the sea cucumber Isostichopus badionotus

This study evaluated the effect of pH on the activity of antioxidant and immune enzymes in the sea cucumber Isostichopus badionotus exposed to different temperatures. The organisms (530 ±110 g) were exposed to 16, 20, 24, 28, 30, 34 and 36°C for 6 h to evaluate thermal limits at two water pH values (treatment = 7.70; control = 8.17). For the thermal tolerance experiment, the organisms were expo...

A new approach for measuring Holothuria mexicana and Isostichopus badionotus for stock assessments

Body length and wet and dry weight measurements of Holothuria mexicana and Isostichopus badionotus collected in shallow water (< 4 m) habitats were assessed. A new approach for measuring length consisted of submerging specimens in cold (~ 8° C) seawater, where they reached maximum contraction in less than 10 seconds. After about a minute, individuals were measured and weighed and then released ...

The effect of temperature changes on feeding activities and daily burrow cycle of sea cucumber, Holothuria parva

Changing in sea water temperature can affect critical parameters for the aquaculture of sea cucumber. In this study, we evaluate the effect of temperature changes on feeding activities and daily burrow cycle of sea cucumber, Holothuria parva and calculate nutritional parameters (intestinal index, organic material absorption efficiency), in two temperature conditions (30 ° C and below 30 ° ...
