Submitted for the DFD07 Meeting of The American Physical Society Regularization techniques for backward–in–time evolutionary PDE problems JONATHAN GUSTAFSSON, BARTOSZ PROTAS, McMaster University — Backward–in–time evolutionary PDE problems have applications in the recently–proposed retrograde data assimilation. We consider the terminal value problem for the Kuramoto–Sivashinsky equation (KSE) in a 1D periodic domain as our model system. The KSE, proposed as a model for interfacial and combustion phenomena, is also often adopted as a toy model for hydrodynamic turbulence because of its multiscale and chaotic dynamics. Backward–in–time problems are typical examples of ill-posed problem, where disturbances are amplified exponentially during the backward march. Regularization is required to solve such problems efficiently and we consider approaches in which the original ill–posed problem is approximated with a less ill–posed problem obtained by adding a regularization term to the original equation. While such techniques are relatively well–understood for linear problems, they less understood in the present nonlinear setting. We consider regularization terms with fixed magnitudes and also explore a novel approach in which these magnitudes are adapted dynamically using simple concepts from the Control Theory. Regularization of the backward-in-time Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation

We are interested in solution techniques for backward–in–time evolutionary PDE problems arising in fluid mechanics. In addition to their intrinsic interest, such techniques have applications in the recently proposed retrograde data assimilation. As our model system we consider the terminal value problem for the Kuramoto–Sivashinsky equation in a 1D periodic domain. Such backward problems are ty...

A regularization method for solving a nonlinear backward inverse heat conduction problem using discrete mollification method

The present essay scrutinizes the application of discrete mollification as a filtering procedure to solve a nonlinear backward inverse heat conduction problem in one dimensional space. These problems are seriously ill-posed. So, we combine discrete mollification and space marching method to address the ill-posedness of the proposed problem. Moreover, a proof of stability and<b...

Stability and regularization of a backward parabolic PDE with variable coefficients

We consider a backward parabolic partial differential equation with variable coefficient a(x, t) in time. A new modification is used on the logarithmic convexity method to obtain a conditional stability estimate. Based on a formal solution, we reveal the essence of the ill-posedness and propose a simple regularization method. Moreover, we apply the regularization method to two representative ca...

Properties of linear systems in PDE - constrained optimization . Part I : Distributed control 1

Optimization problems with constraints that contain a partial differential equation arise widely in many areas of science. In this paper, we consider distributed control problems in which the 2and 3-dimensional Poisson problem is the PDE. If a discretize-then-optimization approach is used to solve the optimization problem, then a large dimensional, symmetric and indefinite linear system must be...

PDE-constrained optimization in medical image analysis

PDE-constrained optimization problems find many applications in medical image analysis, for example, neuroimaging, cardiovascular imaging, and oncological imaging. We review related literature and give examples on the formulation, discretization, and numerical solution of PDE-constrained optimization problems for medical imaging. We discuss three examples. The first one is image registration. T...
