چکیده

Forest fires are an important societal problem. They cause extensive damage and substantial funds are spent preparing for and fighting them. This work develops a stochastic model useful for probabilistic risk assessment, specifically to estimate chances of fires at a future time given explanatory variables. Questions of interest include: Are random effects needed in the risk model? and if yes, How is the analysis to be implemented? An exploratory data analysis approach is taken using both fixed and random effects models for data concerning the Federal Lands in the state of California during the period 2000–2003. Three Environmental Probabilistic Risk Problems

Risk analysis may be defined as the problem of estimating the probabilities of rare events and the magnitudes of associated damages. The topic unifies the environmental sciences. This paper considers risk analyses for earthquakes, wildfires and floods. The computation of insurance premiums is used to motivate and unite the work.

Exposure Assessment of Total Mercury: A Probabilistic-Approach Study Based on Consumption of Canned Fish

Introduction: Exposure to mercury (Hg) by consumption of fish is a recent health concern. So, it is important to evaluate the health risks related to canned fish consumption. The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential health risk based on Hg concentration in people who consumed canned fish with a probabilistic approach in Isfahan City, the central province in Iran. Modeling wildfire risk to northern spotted owl (Strix occidentalis caurina) habitat in Central Oregon, USA

Natural disturbances including wildfire, insects and disease are a growing threat to the remaining late successional forests in the Pacific Northwest, USA. These forests are a cornerstone of the region’s ecological diversity and provide essential habitat to a number of rare terrestrial and aquatic species including the endangered northern spotted owl (Strix occidentalis caurina). Wildfires in p...

Erosion Risk Management Tool (ERMiT) – A Probability-based Erosion Prediction Model

After wildfires, land managers must assess the potential for increased flooding, erosion, and sedimentation, and the increased threat these effects may pose to people, structures, and valued resources. A Web-based Erosion Risk Management Tool (ERMiT) has been developed to predict surface erosion from postfire hillslopes, and to evaluate the potential effectiveness of various erosion mitigation ...
