Multidimensional Scaling and Unfolding

چکیده
Multidimensional scaling (MDS) techniques are statistical techqnies that convert information about distances between a number of objects into a spatial representation of these objects. These techniques were first discussed systematically in psychometrics [Torgerson, 1958; Coombs, 1964] as multidimensional extensions of univariate psychophysics and sensory scaling. Because they needed considerable computational resources, they did not become widely used until he early seventies, when digital computers became available.

Multidimensional Perceptual Unfolding of Spatially Processed Speech I: Deriving Stimulus Space Using Indscal
Multidimensional perceptual unfolding was executed for a set of spatially-processed speech samples reproduced via headphones. This paper describes only the first stage of a two-part study employing the analytic technique termed external unfolding. In this first stage, global dissimilarity ratings were made for all pairwise comparisons of the experimental stimuli under each of four listening con...
متن کاملMultidimensional Unfolding by Nonmetric Multidimensional Scaling of Spearman Distances in the Extended Permutation Polytope.
A multidimensional unfolding technique that is not prone to degenerate solutions and is based on multidimensional scaling of a complete data matrix is proposed: distance information about the unfolding data and about the distances both among judges and among objects is included in the complete matrix. The latter information is derived from the permutation polytope supplemented with the objects,...
متن کاملUsing Multidimensional Scaling for Assessment Economic Development of Regions
Addressing socio-economic development issues are strategic and most important for any country. Multidimensional statistical analysis methods, including comprehensive index assessment, have been successfully used to address this challenge, but they donchr('39')t cover all aspects of development, leaving some gap in the development of multidimensional metrics. The purpose of the study is to const...
متن کاملStatistics: Multidimensional Scaling
Multidimensional scaling (MDS) is a set of data analysis techniques used to explore the structure of (dis)similarity data. MDS represents a set of objects as points in a multidimensional space in such a way that the points corresponding to similar objects are located close together, while those corresponding to dissimilar objects are located far apart. The investigator then attempts to “make se...
متن کاملMultidimensional Scaling in R: SMACOF
This article is an updated version of De Leeuw and Mair (2009b) published in the Journal of Statistical Software. It elaborates on the methodology of multidimensional scaling problems (MDS) solved by means of the majorization algorithm. The objective function to be minimized is known as stress and functions which majorize stress are elaborated. This strategy to solve MDS problems is called SMAC...
