Estimating the number of tissue resident macrophages

Augusto Gonzalez Instituto de Cibernetica, Matematica y Fisica, La Habana, Cuba Abstract I provide a simple estimation for the number of macrophages in a tissue, arising from the hypothesis that they should keep infections below a certain threshold, above which neutrophils are recruited from blood circulation. The estimation reads Nm = aN α cel/Nmax, where a is a numerical coefficient, the exponent α ≈ 2/3, and Nmax is the maximal number of pathogens a macrophage may engulf in the time interval, tr, between pathogen replications.

The Role of Inflammation and Changes of Adipose Tissue-Resident Immune Cells in Increasing the Risk of Cancer: A Narrative Review
The incidence of obesity, as a major health problem, has increased significantly over the past decades. This condition is associated with an increased risk of cancers, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. The current study aimed to investigate the effects of inflammation and changes of adipose tissue-resident immune cells on increasing the risk of cancer in obese individuals. In obesit...
متن کاملPossible Association of CD68 Positive Macrophages with Some other Prognostic Factors (ki67, ER, PR, Her2 neu) in Primary Breast Cancer and Axillary Lymph Node Metastasis
Background: Breast cancer is formed of a neoplastic component (epithelial) and a non-neoplastic component (stroma). Stromal- stromal and tumor- stromal interactions have been shown in the regulation of cancer cell growth, metastatic capacity and outcome of treatment. Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) are a component of tumor stroma reactionsand are considered as an important ...
متن کاملMacrophage Populations in Visceral Adipose Tissue from Pregnant Women: Potential Role of Obesity in Maternal Inflammation.
Obesity is associated with inflammatory changes and accumulation and phenotype polarization of adipose tissue macrophages (ATMs). Obese pregnant women have alterations in adipose tissue composition, but a detailed description of macrophage population is not available. In this study, we characterized macrophage populations in visceral adipose tissue (VAT) from pregnant women with normal, overwei...
متن کاملInvolvement of Macrophages in the Pathogenesis of Familial Amyloid Polyneuropathy and Efficacy of Human iPS Cell-Derived Macrophages in Its Treatment
We hypothesized that tissue-resident macrophages in familial amyloid polyneuropathy (FAP) patients will exhibit qualitative or quantitative abnormalities, that may accelerate transthyretin (TTR)-derived amyloid deposition. To evaluate this, we examined the number and subset of tissue-resident macrophages in heart tissue from amyloid-deposited FAP and control patients. In both FAP and control pa...
متن کاملUltrastructure of mononuclear phagocytes developing in liquid bone marrow cultures. A study on peroxidatic activity
Monoblasts, promonocytes, and macrophages in in vitro cultures of murine bone marrow were studied ultrastructurally, with special attention to peroxidatic activity. Monoblasts show peroxidatic activity in the rough endoplasmic reticulum and nuclear envelope as well as in the granules. The presence of peroxidatic activity in the Golgi apparatus could not be determined. Promonocytes have peroxida...
