A model for electrical stimulation of central myelinated fibers with monopolar electrodes.

چکیده
A mathematical model for monopolar cathodal stimulation of myelinated fibers in an anisotropic medium is developed. This model includes all of the factors known to affect significantly the stimulation properties of myelinated fibers. The quantitative relationship between stimulation current and electrode distance predicted by the model compares favorably with experimental data for stimulating electrode distances greater than about 500 p. The model is used to predict electrical stimulation properties for myelinated fibers in other regions of the central nervous system.

(1) There are data on the amount of current necessary to stimulate a myelinated fiber or cell body and/or its axon a given distance away from a monopolar electrode over the entire range of practical interest for intracranial stimulation. Data do not exist for other electrode configurations. (2) Currents from a monopolar cathode of more than 8 times threshold may block action potentials in axons...

Quantitative extracellular electrical stimulation data were obtained from single fibers in the dorsal columns of anesthetized and paralyzed cats. Single-fiber responses were recorded with glass microelectrodes. The threshold current was found for fibers stimulated with a 100-p diameter monopolar electrode at the surface of the dorsal columns 0.5-2.0 cm from the recording electrode. Shock artifa...

This work was undertaken to contribute to the development of an epi-retinal prosthesis which may someday restore vision to patients blinded by outer retinal degenerations like retinitis pigmentosa. By stimulating surviving cells in tens or hundreds of distinct regions across the retinal surface, the prosthesis might convey the visual scene in the same way that images are represented on a comput...

Functional electrical stimulation (FES) is a general term for therapeutic methods that use electrical stimulation to aid or replace lost ability. For FES systems that communicate with the nervous system, one critical component is the electrode interface through which the machine-body information transfer must occur. In this paper, we examine the influence of inhomogeneous tissue conductivities ...
متن کاملA Simulation Model of the Electrical Characteristics of Human Myelinated Sensory Nerve Fibers
A new nerve fiber model has been developed, incorporating electrical characteristics of human myelinated sensory nerve fibers. It will be used to determine the response of myelinated somatosensory nerve fibers in the spinal cord to electrical stimulation with an epidurally placed electrode. Index terms Spinal cord stimulation, human sensory nerve fiber, simulated action potential, chronaxie dia...
