چکیده
In this thesis we describe an approach to the recommender system problem based on the Probabilistic Relational Model framework. Traditionally, recommender systems have fallen into two broad categories: content-based and collaborative-filteringbased recommender systems, each of which has a distinct set of strengths and weaknesses. We present a sound statistical framework for integrating both of the above approaches, which allows the strengths of one system to help mitigate the weaknesses of the other. To accomplish this goal we apply the framework of Probabilistic Relational Models (PRMs) to the recommender system problem domain. We begin by applying standard PRMs (sPRMs) to the EachMovie recommender system dataset, which uncovers several severe limitations of the sPRM framework. We then apply an extension of PRMs called Hierarchical PRMs (hPRMs) to the recommender problem, which from a theoretical perspective should address several of the limitations of sPRMs. We show through empirical results that hPRMs do, in fact, achieve superior results on the EachMovie dataset.

Fuzzy Hierarchical Location-Allocation Models for Congested Systems
There exist various service systems that have hierarchical structure. In hierarchical service networks, facilities at different levels provide different types of services. For example, in health care systems, general centers provide low-level services such as primary health care services, while the specialized hospitals provide high-level services. Because of demand congestion in service networ...
متن کاملRecommender systems inspired by the structure of quantum theory
Physicists use quantum models to describe the behavior of physical systems. Quantum models owe their success to their interpretability, to their relation to probabilistic models (quantization of classical models) and to their high predictive power. Beyond physics, these properties are valuable in general data science. This motivates the use of quantum models to analyze general nonphysical datas...
متن کاملHierarchical Probabilistic Relational Models for Collaborative Filtering
This paper applies Probabilistic Relational Models (PRMs) to the Collaborative Filtering task, focussing on the EachMovie data set. We first learn a standard PRM, and show that its performance is competitive with the best known techniques. We then define a hierarchical PRM, which extends standard PRMs by dynamically refining classes into hierarchies, which improves the expressiveness as well as...
متن کاملEvaluation of recommender systems: A multi-criteria decision making approach
The evaluation and selection of recommender systems is a difficult decision making process. This difficulty is partially due to the large diversity of published evaluation criteria in addition to lack of standardized methods of evaluation. As such, a systematic methodology is needed that explicitly considers multiple, possibly conflicting metrics and assists decision makers to evaluate and find...
