Perceptual Codes 2 3

چکیده
31 Working memory representations serve as templates that guide behavior, but the neural 32 basis of these templates remains elusive. We tested the hypothesis that working memory 33 templates are maintained by biasing activity in sensoriperceptual neurons that code for 34 features of items being held in memory. Neural activity was recorded using event-related 35 potentials (ERPs) as participants viewed a series of faces and responded when a face 36 matched a Target face held in working memory. Our prediction was that if activity in 37 neurons coding for the features of the Target is preferentially weighted during 38 maintenance of the Target, then ERP activity evoked by a non-Target Probe face should 39 be commensurate with the visual similarity between Target and Probe. Visual similarity 40 was operationalized as the degree of overlap in visual features between Target and Probe. 41 A face-sensitive ERP response was modulated by Target-Probe similarity. Amplitude 42 was largest for Probes that were similar to the Target, and decreased monotonically as a 43 function of decreasing Target-Probe similarity. These results indicate that neural activity 44 is weighted in favor of visual features that comprise an actively held memory 45 representation. As such, our findings support the notion that working memory templates 46 rely on neural populations involved in forming percepts of memory items. 47 48

Exploring the Meaning of Quality from Urban Space Users’ Viewpoint by Analyzing Conceptual Environment Codes
The main purpose of urban design is to create good and high-quality urban spaces and environments for people to live while such quality may not be determined only by imposing a structural, perceptual and value system of the designer. It can be said that human and his powers to perceive surrounding environments are the focus of urban design. Having reviewed previous researches and theories in re...
متن کاملA Qualitative Meta-analysis of Perceptual-motor Problems in Visually Impaired People
Introduction: Perceptual motor activities improve motor skills and learning. These skills play an effective role in receiving, interpreting and responding to the sensory stimuli. This study aimed to identify perceptual-motor problems in visually impaired people. Methods: This qualitative research was conducted using a research synthesis method. Therefore, the analysis unit consisted of all the...
متن کاملThe PerTOHS Theory for On-Line Handwriting Segmentation
In this paper, we present PerTOHS theory for on-line handwriting segmentation, based on the fact that in order to identify patterns, our human perceptual system is based on basic features called perceptual codes. Analysing handwriting, we notice the existence of elementary and global ones. Perceptual organization of elementary perceptual codes in various constraints generates global ones, and t...
متن کاملA New Approach for the Extraction of Handwriting Perceptual Codes using Fuzzy Logic
In this paper we present a new method to extract the elementary perceptual codes from on-line handwriting scripts. This approach uses the advantages of fuzzy sets theory to classify the on-line handwriting strokes into elementary perceptual codes and the Betaelliptic model for the generation of complex handwriting movements. Human perceptual system is based on some basic features in order to re...
متن کاملBinding Success and Failure: Evidence for the Spontaneous Integration of Perceptual Features and Object Evaluations
Humans represent perceptual events in a distributed, feature-specific fashion, which calls for some sort of feature integration. It has been suggested that processing an event leads to the creation of a temporary binding of the corresponding feature codes - an object file. Here we show that object files do not only comprise of perceptual feature codes but also include codes that reflect evaluat...
متن کاملContinuous Spatial Representations in the Olfactory Bulb may Reflect Perceptual Categories
In sensory processing of odors, the olfactory bulb is an important relay station, where odor representations are noise-filtered, sharpened, and possibly re-organized. An organization by perceptual qualities has been found previously in the piriform cortex, however several recent studies indicate that the olfactory bulb code reflects behaviorally relevant dimensions spatially as well as at the p...
