چکیده

We studied the representations underlying audiovisual integration using a priming paradigm. Audiovisual primes, preceding auditory targets, were either incongruent (auditory /ba/ & visual /va/) or congruent (auditory /va/ & visual /va/, auditory /ba/ & visual /ba/). The targets were /ba/ or /va/. The intensity of the prime ́s auditory component was either 50 dB or 60 dB. Identification speed of the target /ba/ was strongly affected by the nature of the prime. The effect of the incongruent audiovisual prime depended on the intensity of its acoustic component. Our results suggest that processing of visible articulatory movements influence auditory speech processing.

Effect of attentional load on audiovisual speech perception: evidence from ERPs

Seeing articulatory movements influences perception of auditory speech. This is often reflected in a shortened latency of auditory event-related potentials (ERPs) generated in the auditory cortex. The present study addressed whether this early neural correlate of audiovisual interaction is modulated by attention. We recorded ERPs in 15 subjects while they were presented with auditory, visual, a...

Influence of facial views on the mcgurk effect in auditory noise

To investigate the nature of facial information involved in the integration of audiovisual speech perception, we examined the influence of facial views on the McGurk effect under two auditory conditions. While the speech perception of most of the audiovisual syllables used was little affected by the facial views and the auditory noise, a stronger McGurk effect was obtained for the 3/4-view imag...

Visual lexical stress information in audiovisual spoken-word recognition

Listeners use suprasegmental auditory lexical stress information to resolve the competition words engage in during spoken-word recognition. The present study investigated whether (a) visual speech provides lexical stress information, and, more importantly, (b) whether this visual lexical stress information is used to resolve lexical competition. Dutch word pairs that differ in the lexical stres...

Audiovisual interaction on the perception of frequency glide of linear sweep tones

Audiovisual interaction was found on the perception of frequency glide of linear sweep tones. The auditory and visual stimuli were designed to simulate the formant trajectories of the syllables that induced the McGurk effect. Linear sweep tones were used for the auditory stimuli. For the visual stimuli, moving spheres were used. The frequency glide was differently perceived depending on the sph...

A Causal Inference Model Explains Perception of the McGurk Effect and Other Incongruent Audiovisual Speech

Audiovisual speech integration combines information from auditory speech (talker's voice) and visual speech (talker's mouth movements) to improve perceptual accuracy. However, if the auditory and visual speech emanate from different talkers, integration decreases accuracy. Therefore, a key step in audiovisual speech perception is deciding whether auditory and visual speech have the same source,...
