چکیده

Changes to climate-carbon cycle feedbacks may significantly affect the Earth System’s response to greenhouse gas emissions. These feedbacks are usually analysed from numerical output of complex and arguably opaque Earth System Models (ESMs). Here, we construct a stylized global climate-carbon cycle model, test its output against complex ESMs, and investigate the strengths of its climate-carbon cycle feedbacks analytically. The analytical expressions we obtain aid understanding of carbon-cycle feedbacks and the operation of the carbon cycle. We use our results to analytically study the relative strengths 5 of different climate-carbon cycle feedbacks and how they may change in the future, as well as to compare different feedback formalisms. Simple models such as that developed here also provide ‘workbenches’ for simple but mechanistically based explorations of Earth system processes, such as interactions and feedbacks between the Planetary Boundaries, that are currently too uncertain to be included in complex ESMs.

Reversible and irreversible impacts of greenhouse gas emissions in multi-century projections with the NCAR global coupled carbon cycle-climate model

The legacy of historical and the long-term impacts of 21st century greenhouse gas emissions on climate, ocean acidification, and carbon-climate feedbacks are investigated with a coupled carbon cycle-climate model. Emission commitment scenarios with zero emissions after year 2100 and 21st century emissions of 1,800, 900, and 0 gigatons of carbon are run up to year 2500. The reversibility and irr...

Explaining the eventual transient saturation of climate-carbon cycle feedback

BACKGROUND Coupled climate-carbon cycle simulations generally show that climate feedbacks amplify the buildup of CO2 under respective anthropogenic emission. The effect of climate-carbon cycle feedback is characterised by the feedback gain: the relative increase in CO2 increment as compared to uncoupled simulations. According to the results of the recent Coupled Climate-Carbon Cycle Model Inter...

An Examination of Anthropogenic Climate Forcing in the 21st Century: Greenhouse Gases and Aerosols – Direct and Indirect

The projection of future climate change – and its consequent impacts on societies and individuals – depends not only on society's direct emissions of greenhouse gases and aerosols, but also on the Earth system's response to these changes insofar as they additionally alter the radiative forcing of climate. These feedbacks involve coupling across the physical climate and biogeochemical systems, a...

Efficacy of geoengineering to limit 21st century sea-level rise.

Geoengineering has been proposed as a feasible way of mitigating anthropogenic climate change, especially increasing global temperatures in the 21st century. The two main geoengineering options are limiting incoming solar radiation, or modifying the carbon cycle. Here we examine the impact of five geoengineering approaches on sea level; SO(2) aerosol injection into the stratosphere, mirrors in ...

Emissions targets for CO 2 stabilization as modified by carbon cycle feedbacks

A B S T R A C T Carbon cycle feedbacks will have a direct effect on anthropogenic emissions required to stabilize CO 2 in the atmosphere. In this study, I used an intermediate complexity coupled climate-carbon model to quantify allowable CO 2 emissions for a series of scenarios leading to CO 2 stabilization at levels between 350 and 1000 ppmv. For all scenarios, global temperature did not stabi...
