Dendritic Spines

چکیده
What are they? Dendritic spines are small protrusions that emerge from the dendrites of neurons (Figure 1). Most excitatory synapses in the brain are found on spine heads. Typically, a spine consists of a bulbous head, volume 0.001–1 μm3, at the end of a thin spine neck, diameter around 0.1 μm. A 100 μm length dendrite can contain several hundred spines. The human cerebral cortex is thought to contain in the order of 1014 spines!

Effect of Trigonelline on Dendritic Morphology in the Hippocampus and Prefrontal Cortex in Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetic Rats
Introduction: Diabetes mellitus causes adverse changes in the neurological morphology of the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex of the brain by increasing oxidative stress. Trigonelline has antihyperglycemic effects and can inhibit oxidative stress. The aim of this study was to evaluate the protective effect of trigonelline on dendritic changes in hippocampal and prefrontal cortex neurons in dia...

In mammalian cortex, most excitatory inputs occur on dendritic spines, avoiding dendritic shafts. Although spines biochemically isolate inputs, nonspiny neurons can also implement biochemical compartmentalization; so, it is possible that spines have an additional function. We have recently shown that the spine neck can filter membrane potentials going into and out of the spine. To investigate t...
متن کاملTransport of a kinesin-cargo pair along microtubules into dendritic spines undergoing synaptic plasticity
Synaptic plasticity often involves changes in the structure and composition of dendritic spines. Vesicular cargos and organelles enter spines either by exocytosing in the dendrite shaft and diffusing into spines or through a kinesin to myosin hand-off at the base of spines. Here we present evidence for microtubule (MT)-based targeting of a specific motor/cargo pair directly into hippocampal den...
متن کاملDendritic spines: from structure to in vivo function.
Dendritic spines arise as small protrusions from the dendritic shaft of various types of neuron and receive inputs from excitatory axons. Ever since dendritic spines were first described in the nineteenth century, questions about their function have spawned many hypotheses. In this review, we introduce understanding of the structural and biochemical properties of dendritic spines with emphasis ...
متن کاملAccelerators, Brakes, and Gears of Actin Dynamics in Dendritic Spines.
Dendritic spines are actin-rich structures that accommodate the postsynaptic sites of most excitatory synapses in the brain. Although dendritic spines form and mature as synaptic connections develop, they remain plastic even in the adult brain, where they can rapidly grow, change, or collapse in response to normal physiological changes in synaptic activity that underlie learning and memory. Pat...
متن کاملElectrical Advantages of Dendritic Spines
Many neurons receive excitatory glutamatergic input almost exclusively onto dendritic spines. In the absence of spines, the amplitudes and kinetics of excitatory postsynaptic potentials (EPSPs) at the site of synaptic input are highly variable and depend on dendritic location. We hypothesized that dendritic spines standardize the local geometry at the site of synaptic input, thereby reducing lo...
