چکیده

The authors have studied adsorption of acetylene on Cu͑110͒ by means of low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy. Adsorbed molecules preferentially aggregate at 40 K to yield dimer, trimer, and larger islands on the surface. Isolated species ͑monomer͒ adsorbs on the fourfold hollow site with ϳsp 3 rehybridization as characterized by inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy. Tunneling electron induces an acetylene molecule to migrate along the trough of Cu͑110͒. The migration proceeds in two steps: the molecule first hops to the adjacent long-bridge site and then to the next fourfold site. The voltage and current dependencies of the hopping probability show that the migration is induced by inelastic electron tunneling that causes vibrational excitation of mainly C–H stretch mode.

Scanning Tunneling Microscopy Studies of Phase Transitions in Liquid Crystals

The phase transitions of two different liquid crystal materials adsorbed on graphite were studied using scanning tunneling microscopy. From the dimensions, the periodicity and the symmetry of the observed structures at different temperatures, a strong relationship between the bulk phases and the adsorbed monolayer phases was found. In addition, this study shows that the transition temperatures ...

First-principles theory of inelastic currents in a scanning tunneling microscope

A first-principles theory of inelastic tunneling between a model probe tip and an atom adsorbed on a surface is presented, extending the elastic tunneling theory of Tersoff and Hamann. The inelastic current is proportional to the change in the local density of states at the center of the tip due to the addition of the adsorbate. We use the theory to investigate the vibrational heating of an ads...

RICE UNIVERSITY Functionalization of Scanning Tunneling Microscope Probes with Buckminsterfullerenes

This dissertation analyzes the feasibility and advantages of molecular functionalization of scanning tunneling microscope (STM) probes with buckminsterfullerenes. The C60 molecules are adsorbed onto the tunneling region of a STM tip by rastering the tip in a thin lm of C60 vacuum deposited on graphite. The individual tip-adsorbed molecules are subsequently imaged in situ by scanning the fullere...

Spin- and energy-dependent tunneling through a single molecule with intramolecular spatial resolution.

We investigate the spin- and energy-dependent tunneling through a single organic molecule (CoPc) adsorbed on a ferromagnetic Fe thin film, spatially resolved by low-temperature spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy. Interestingly, the metal ion as well as the organic ligand show a significant spin dependence of tunneling current flow. State-of-the-art ab initio calculations including als...

Scanning tunneling microscopy of the formation, transformation, and property of oligothiophene self-organizations on graphite and gold surfaces.

Two alkyl-substituted dual oligothiophenes, quarterthiophene (4T)-trimethylene (tm)-octithiophene (8T) and 4T-tm-4T, were used to fabricate molecular structures on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite and Au(111) surfaces. The resulted structures were investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy. The 4T-tm-8T and 4T-tm-4T molecules self-organize into long-range ordered structures with linear and...
