چکیده

An experimental study of saturated pool boiling from a single artificial nucleation site on a polished copper surface has been performed. Isolated bubbles grow and depart from the artificial cavity and the bubble dynamics are recorded with a high speed camera. Experimental results are obtained for bubble growth, departure and vertical rise both with and without the application of an electric field between an upper electrode and the boiling surface. As detailed in a previous paper from the same research group the high spatial and temporal resolution of the video sequences facilitated the development of a baseline experimental bubble growth law which predicts the bubble volumetric growth characteristics for a range of surface superheats at atmospheric pressure. The presence of an electric field has been found to positively augment the convective heat transfer over that of buoyant natural convection. Further to this, for high electric field strengths, the bubble shape,

Availability Analysis For Heterogeneous Nucleation In A Uniform Electric Field

Industrial demands for more compact heat exchangers are a motivation to find new technology features. Electrohydrodynamics (EHD) is introduced as a promising phenomenon for heat transfer enhancement mechanisms. Similar to any new technology, EHD has not been understood completely yet and requires more fundamental studies. In boiling phase change phenomena, nucleation is the dominant mechanism i...

Experimental Analysis of Boiling Enhancement from Surfactant Addition with Electric Fields

This thesis consists of an experimental investigation of the effect of surfactants on the boiling curve of water. Via adsorbtion to the boiling surface, surfactants alter the surface energy interaction during bubble formation at nucleation sites. The surfactants initially enhance the heat transfer coefficient at the onset of nucleate boiling due to higher nucleation density and higher bubble de...

Steps towards the Development of an Experimentally Verified Simulation of Pool Nucleate Boiling on a Silicon Wafer with Artificial Sites

Nucleate boiling is a very effective heat transfer cooling process, used in numerous industrial applications. Despite intensive research over decades, a reliable model of nucleate pool boiling is still not available. This paper presents a numerical and experimental investigation of nucleate boiling from artificial nucleation sites. The numerical investigation described in the first section of t...

A Free-Particles-Based Technique for Boiling Heat Transfer Enhancement in a Wetting Liquid

An easy-to-implement technique for pool boiling heat transfer enhancement is proposed and evaluated through an experimental investigation. This free-particle technique brings about nucleate boiling at a low degree of superheat by means of metal particles that are not fixed to the heated surface, but rather are free to move with respect to the surface. The effects of copper particles with sizes ...

Direct three-dimensional numerical simulation of nucleate boiling using the level contour reconstruction method

The nucleate boiling process is known to be a very efficient mode of heat transfer. It is desirable to operate many engineering applications in this mode since high heat transfer rates and convection coefficients are associated with small values of the excess temperature. Despite its importance, nucleate boiling has not been fully numerically simulated until very recently because of the complex...
