Rollout Algorithms for Stochastic Scheduling Problems

چکیده
Stochastic scheduling problems are difficult stochastic control problems with combinatorial decision spaces. In this paper we focus on a class of stochastic scheduling problems, the quiz problem and its variations. We discuss the use of heuristics for their solution, and we propose rollout algorithms based on these heuristics, which approximate the stochastic dynamic programming algorithm. We show how the rollout algorithms can be implemented efficiently, and we delineate circumstances under which they are guaranteed to perform better than the heuristics on which they are based. We also show computational results which suggest that the performance of the rollout policies is near-optimal, and is substantially better than the performance of their underlying heuristics. 1 This work was supported in part by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research under grant no. Three Hybrid Metaheuristic Algorithms for Stochastic Flexible Flow Shop Scheduling Problem with Preventive Maintenance and Budget Constraint
Stochastic flexible flow shop scheduling problem (SFFSSP) is one the main focus of researchers due to the complexity arises from inherent uncertainties and also the difficulty of solving such NP-hard problems. Conventionally, in such problems each machine’s job process time may encounter uncertainty due to their relevant random behaviour. In order to examine such problems more realistically, fi...
متن کاملA stochastic model for project selection and scheduling problem
Resource limitation in zero time may cause to some profitable projects not to be selected in project selection problem, thus simultaneous project portfolio selection and scheduling problem has received significant attention. In this study, budget, investment costs and earnings are considered to be stochastic. The objectives are maximizing net present values of selected projects and minimizing v...
متن کاملAverage-Case Performance of Rollout Algorithms for Knapsack Problems
Rollout algorithms have demonstrated excellent performance on a variety of dynamic and discrete optimization problems. Interpreted as an approximate dynamic programming algorithm, a rollout algorithm estimates the value-to-go at each decision stage by simulating future events while following a heuristic policy, referred to as the base policy. While in many cases rollout algorithms are guarantee...
متن کاملA Rollout Metaheuristic for Job Shop Scheduling Problems
In this paper we deal with solution algorithms for a general formulation of the job shop problem, called alternative graph. We study in particular the job shop scheduling problem with blocking and/or no-wait constraints. Most of the key properties developed for solving the job shop problem with infinite capacity buffer do not hold in the more general alternative graph model. In this paper we re...
متن کاملA rollout algorithm framework for heuristic solutions to finite-horizon stochastic dynamic programs
Rollout algorithms have enjoyed success across a variety of domains as heuristic solution procedures for stochastic dynamic programs (SDPs). However, because most rollout implementations are closely tied to specific problems, the visibility of advances in rollout methods is limited, thereby making it difficult for researchers in other fields to extract general procedures and apply them to diffe...
