چکیده
This article develops a Gricean account for the computation of scalar implicatures in cases where one scalar term is in the scope of another. It shows that a cross-product of two quantitative scales yields the appropriate scale for many such cases. One exception is cases involving disjunction. For these, I propose an analysis that makes use of a novel, partially ordered quantitative scale for disjunction and capitalizes on the idea that implicatures may have different epistemic status.

Scalar Implicatures in Complex Sentences

متن کاملTitle : The Computation of Scalar Implicatures : Pragmatic ,
I provide an overview of current theories of scalar implicature: the pragmatic (or Gricean), the lexical and the grammatical theory. The empirical focus are global and local, but also intermediate implicatures. I argue that the grammatical theory is conceptually less well motivated than even a combination of the pragmatic and the lexical theory, and that the grammatical theory therefore require...
متن کاملEmbedded Implicatures and Experimental Constraints: A Reply to Geurts & Pouscoulous and Chemla
Experimental evidence on embedded implicatures by Chemla (2009b) and Geurts & Pouscoulous (2009a) has fewer theoretical consequences than assumed: On the one hand, the evidence successfully argues against obligatory local implicature computation, which has however already been discredited. On the other hand, the data are fully consistent with optional local implicature computation.
متن کامل‘Maximize Presupposition’ and Gricean Reasoning
Recent semantic research has made increasing use of a principle, ‘Maximize Presupposition’, which requires that under certain circumstances the strongest possible presupposition be marked (Sauerland 2006). This principle is generally taken to be irreducible to standard (neo-) Gricean reasoning because, by definition, the forms that are in competition have the same assertive component (Percus 20...
متن کاملTesting Calculation of Scalar Implicatures in English and American Sign Language
Scalar implicatures have been a subject of much debate concerning their place as part of either the grammatical computation of the semantics of a sentence or as post-compositional pragmatic reasoning. This paper describes three experiments addressing the semantic/pragmatic question of scalar implicatures from a developmental perspective, one in English and two in American Sign Language (ASL). T...
