Scientific Reasoning Is Material Inference : Combining

چکیده

Whereas an inference (deductive as well as inductive) is usually viewed as being valid in virtue of its argument form, the present paper argues that scientific reasoning is material inference, i.e., justified in virtue of its content. A material inference is licensed by the empirical content embodied in the concepts contained in the premisses and conclusion. Understanding scientific reasoning as material inference has the advantage of combining different aspects of scientific reasoning, such as confirmation, discovery, and explanation. This approach explains why these different aspects (including discovery) can be rational without conforming to formal schemes, and why scientific reasoning is local, i.e., justified only in certain domains and contingent on particular empirical facts. The notion of material inference also fruitfully interacts with accounts of conceptual change and psychological theories of concepts. SCIENTIFIC REASONING IS MATERIAL INFERENCE 2

Turning Norton’s Dome against Material Induction

John Norton has proposed a position of “material induction” that denies the existence of a universal inductive inference schema behind scientific reasoning. In this vein, Norton has recently presented a “dome scenario” based on Newtonian physics that, in his understanding, is at variance with Bayesianism. The present note points out that a closer analysis of the dome scenario reveals incompatib...

Can Errror-Statistical Inference Function Securely?

Among the important tasks for a theory of ampliative inference are the classification of the kinds of “material postulates”1 that are needed for specific inferences and the explanation of how those assumptions function in such inferences. The present paper undertakes an analysis of Deborah Mayo’s error-statistical (ES) account of scientific evidence in order to clarify just these points as well...

ROBUSTNESS OF THE TRIPLE IMPLICATION INFERENCE METHOD BASED ON THE WEIGHTED LOGIC METRIC

This paper focuses on the robustness problem of full implication triple implication inference method for fuzzy reasoning. First of all, based on strong regular implication, the weighted logic metric for measuring distance between two fuzzy sets is proposed. Besides, under this metric, some robustness results of the triple implication method are obtained, which demonstrates that the triple impli...

On types of scientific inquiry: The role of qualitative reasoning

One type of scientific inquiry involves the analysis of large data sets, often using statistical models and formal tests of hypotheses. A moment’s thought, however, shows that there must be other types of scientific inquiry. For instance, something has to be done to answer questions like the following. How should a study be designed? What sorts of data should be collected? What kind of a model ...
