چکیده

Within the standard framework of structure formation, where clusters and groups of galaxies are built up from the merging of smaller systems, the physical properties of the intracluster medium, such as the gas temperature and the total X-ray luminosity, are predicted to possess well defined self-similar scaling relations. Observed clusters and groups, however, show strong deviations from these predicted relations. We argue that these deviations are unlikely to be entirely due to observational biasses; we assume they are physically based, due to the presence of excess entropy in the intracluster medium in addition to that generated by accretion shocks during the formation of the cluster. Several mechanisms have been suggested as a means of generating this entropy. Focussing on those mechanisms that preheat the gas before it becomes a constituent of the virialized cluster environment, we present a simple, intuitive, physically motivated, analytic model that successfully captures the important physics associated with the accretion of high entropy gas onto group and cluster-scale systems. We use the model to derive the new relationships between the observable properties of clusters and groups of galaxies, as well as the evolution of these relations. These include the luminosity-temperature and luminosity-σ relations, as well as the temperature distribution function and X-ray luminosity function. These properties are found to be a more accurate description of the observations than those predicted from the standard framework. Future observations will that further test the efficacy of the preheated gas scenario are also discussed.

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups

It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...

The X-ray Properties of Moderate-redshift Galaxy Groups Selected by Association with Gravitational Lenses

We present results from a systematic investigation of the X-ray properties of a sample of moderate redshift (0.3 < z < 0.6) galaxy groups. These groups were selected not by traditional X-ray or optical search methods, but rather by an association, either physical or along the line of sight, with a strong gravitational lens. We calculate the properties of seven galaxy groups in the fields of six...

Forty Years of X-Ray Binaries

In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...

X-ray Properties of Intermediate-redshift Groups of Galaxies

We have undertaken a multiwavelength project to study the relatively unknown properties of groups and poor clusters of galaxies at intermediate redshifts. In this paper, we describe the XMM-Newton observations of six X-ray selected groups with 0.2 < z < 0.6. The X-ray properties of these systems are generally in good agreement with the properties of low-redshift groups. They appear to follow th...

baryonic matter distribution in the large-scale structures is one of the main questions in cosmology. This distribution can provide valuable information regarding  the processes of galaxy formation and evolution. On the other hand, the missing baryon problem is still under debate. One of the most important cosmological structures for studying the rate and  the distribution of the baryons is gal...
