Genericity in Spatial Databases
نویسندگان
چکیده
The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the characteristics that distinguish spatial databases systems from traditional ones. Guided by the concept of genericity, we give an overview of some well-known data models and query languages of spatial database systems. For spatial databases the concept of genericity, as introduced by Chandra and Harel for classical databases 5], breaks up in a hierarchy of genericity-classes, each of which is determined by a particular set of geometric properties. In this respect, we classify data models and data representations according to the type of operations they are designed to support. We also look at query languages that are sound and complete in the sense that they support one particular type of genericity.

We address a fundamental question concerning spatio-temporal database systems: “What are exactly spatio-temporal queries?” We define spatio-temporal queries to be computable mappings that are also generic, meaning that the result of a query may only depend to a limited extent on the actual internal representation of the spatio-temporal data. Genericity is defined as invariance under groups of g...

متن کاملVariadic Genericity Through Linguistic Reflection: A Performance Evaluation
The use of variadic genericity within schema definitions increases the variety of databases that may be captured by a single specification. For example, a class of databases of engineering part objects, in which each database instance varies in the types of the parts and the number of part types, should lend itself to a single definition. However, precise specification of such a schema is beyon...
