چکیده

This paper presents a haptic virtual reality tool developed to enhance the accessibility for the visually impaired. The proposed approach focuses on the development of a highly interactive haptic virtual reality system that allows visually impaired, to study and interact with various virtual objects in specially designed virtual environments. The system is based on the use of the CyberGraspTM and the PHANToMTM haptic devices. A number of custom applications have been developed based on object recognition and manipulation, and utilizing the advantages of both haptic devices. The system has been tested and evaluated in three custom training applications for the visually impaired.

Performance and Co-Presence in Heterogeneous Haptic Collaboration

Based on a distributed architecture for real-time collection and broadcast of haptic information to multiple participants, heterogeneous haptic devices (the PHANToM and the CyberGrasp) were used in an experiment to test the performance accuracy and sense of presence of participants engaged in a task involving mutual touch. In the experiment, the hands of CyberGrasp users were modeled for the co...

Image to Haptic Data Conversion: A First Step to Improving Blind People’s Accessibility to Printed Graphs

This paper introduces a system which converts scanned line graphs into a data format which is interpretable by a haptic device. A virtual line graph can then be rendered and explored through touch by using the haptic device. This system provides an alternative method for blind or visually impaired people to access printed graphs. This method has a simpler production process than the conventiona...

Design and Implementation of Virtual Environments for Training of the Visually Impaired

This paper presents the virtual reality applications developed for the feasibility study tests of the EU funded IST project ENORASI. ENORASI aims at developing a highly interactive and extensible haptic VR training system that allows visually impaired people, especially those blind from birth, to study and interact with various virtual objects. A number of custom applications have been develope...

Haptic Collaboration over the Internet

We address the real-time collection and simultaneous broadcast of haptic information to multiple haptic session participants, so that collaborative exploration of objects is possible, even when users are equipped with disparate haptic devices, such as the PHANToM and the CyberGrasp. We have designed and are currently testing a prototype system for haptic collaboration over the Internet. The bas...
