چکیده
This manuscript started as Program Notes for a Lecture Without Words (without spoken words, to be exact) to accompany a performance of the complete Art of Fugue at the 19 Annual Roland D. Pinkham M.D. Basic Science Lectureship on “Music and the Brain” The music was performed on the Willis pipe organ at the St. Joseph Church, Seattle, November 18, 2005 These Notes (last updated July 2015) are being expanded for a book “From Bach to Einstein and Beyond: Variations on Music, Science and Society”

Fugue and Variations on some Themes in Art and Science
This paper describes the development over several years of Fugue, an art| science audio-visual piece inspired by the human immune system. It has been presented in a number of different contexts – as an artwork, as an aid to the public understanding of science, and as a potential tool for scientists – and it is still under development. Stimulated by the response of some participants to the inter...
متن کاملBach’s Art of the Fugue
J. S. Bach wrote The Art of the Fugue during the last years of his life. He probably began work on what turned out to be his longest and most complex instrumental composition in 1743, and he left the work incomplete at his death in July, 1750. The work was published in 1751 in Leipzig in a poorly engraved edition, the preparation of only part of which had been supervised by Bach himself. The pu...
متن کاملDissociative Fugue: Diagnosis, Presentation and Treatment Among the Traditional Shona People
Dissociative fugue seems to exist in all societies of the world. It could be noticeable but its prevalence in the general population is very low. Different societies of the world could identify dissociative fugue in different culturally relevant terms. The objective of the study was to assess the diagnosis, presentation and treatment of dissociative fugue among the traditional Shona people of Z...
متن کاملWeak Ideal Functionalities for Designing Random Oracles with Applications to Fugue
We define ideal functionalities that are weaker than ideal functionalities traditionally used in realizing variable input length (VIL) random oracles (RO) in the indifferentiability or universal-Composability (UC) model. We also show realization of VIL-RO using these weaker ideal functionalities, with applications to proving Fugue and CubeHash hash functions to be VIL-RO. We argue that componen...
متن کاملImproved security analysis of Fugue-256
Fugue is a cryptographic hash function designed by Halevi, Hall and Jutla and was one of the fourteen hash algorithms of the second round of NIST’s SHA3 hash competition. We consider Fugue-256, the 256-bit instance of Fugue. Fugue-256 updates a state of 960 bits with a round transformation R parametrized by a 32-bit message word. Twice in every state update, this transform invokes an AES like r...
