چکیده
Chemicals in any form can be safely stored, handled or used if the physical, chemical, and hazardous properties are fully unders tood, and if proper precautions, including the use of adequate safeguards and personal protection equipment, are taken. In this paper , the chemicals to be considered are the g roup of chemicals known as polyisocyanates, a n d the methods of every-day handling of them is impor tant and involves a number of safety precautions. The word " isocyanates " , as used today, covers a small g roup of polyfunctional organic chemicals which are being used in increasing quantities in widely varying industries. The most common isocyanate (see Table I) is toluene diisocyanate, which is a mixed isomer of 2:4 and 2:6 toluene diisocyanate used in the product ion of rigid and flexible urethanes and urethane coatings. Other common isocyanates a re methylene bis (4 phenyl isocyanate), which is being used in increasing quantities in the product ion of rigid urethanes, and as a bonding agent for elastomers and textile fibres, a n d naphthalene 1:5 diisocyanate, used quite extensively in the product ion of solid urethane elastomers. Polyisocyanates have assumed importance as the building units of high molecular weight polymers having properties of adhesives, plastics, rigid or elastic foams, and synthetic rubbers.

Quantification of isocyanates and amines in polyurethane foams and coated products by liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry
An analytical method for the identification and quantification of 10 different isocyanates and 11 different amines in polyurethane (PUR) foam and PUR-coated products was developed and optimized. Isocyanates were extracted and derivatized with di-n-butylamine, while amines were extracted with methanol. Quantification was subsequently performed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. U...
متن کاملIsocyanate emissions from pyrolysis of mattresses containing polyurethane foam.
This study examined the emissions of powerful asthmatic agents called isocyanates from small-scale pyrolysis experiments of two common foams employed in mattress production such as flexible polyurethane foam (FPUF) and viscoelastic memory foam (VMF). A nitrogen atmosphere and five different temperatures, 300, 350, 400, 450 and 850 °C, were selected to carry out the experiments in order to evalu...

متن کاملAmines: possible causative agents in the development of bronchial hyperreactivity in workers manufacturing polyurethanes from isocyanates.
Investigations of respiratory symptoms among workers in a factory producing polyurethane foam included measurement of air pollution with amines and isocyanates and a simultaneous health investigation of the exposed workers. An increased bronchial reactivity to inhaled methacholine was found in the study group compared with two unexposed control groups. This finding, together with visual disturb...
متن کاملGlycols in Polyurethane Foam Formulations with a Starch–Oil Composite
A dry starch–oil composite was blended with each of three glycols; ethylene, polyethylene, and propylene, and then reacted with isocyanate to produce polyurethane foams. The liquid glycols permitted the dry composite to blend well with the other ingredients in the foam formulations. Infrared spectra confirmed the presence of urethane structures in the composite–glycol foams. Polyethylene glycol...
