Formation and dynamics of van der Waals molecules in buffer-gas traps.

We show that weakly bound He-containing van der Waals molecules can be produced and magnetically trapped in buffer-gas cooling experiments, and provide a general model for the formation and dynamics of these molecules. Our analysis shows that, at typical experimental parameters, thermodynamics favors the formation of van der Waals complexes composed of a helium atom bound to most open-shell ato...

Comparing continuous wave progressive saturation EPR and time domain saturation recovery EPR over the entire motional range of nitroxide spin labels.

The measurement of spin-lattice relaxation rates from spin labels, such as nitroxides, in the presence and absence of spin relaxants provides information that is useful for determining biomolecular properties such as nucleic acid dynamics and the interaction of proteins with membranes. We compare X-band continuous wave (CW) and pulsed or time domain (TD) EPR methods for obtaining spin-lattice r...

Estimating Bounds on Collisional Relaxation Rates of Spin-Polarized Rb Atoms at Ultracold Temperatures

National Institute of Standards and Technology, Gaithersburg, MD 20899-0001 We present quantum scattering calculations for the collisional relaxation rate coefficient of spin-polarized Rb(f = 2,m = 2) atoms, which determines the loss rate of cold Rb atoms from a magnetic trap. Unlike the lighter alkali atoms, spin-polarized Rb atoms can undergo dipolar relaxation due to both the normal spin-spi...

Formation of van der Waals molecules in buffer-gas-cooled magnetic traps [corrected].

We predict that a large class of helium-containing cold polar molecules form readily in a cryogenic buffer gas, achieving densities as high as 10(12)  cm(-3). We explore the spin relaxation of these molecules in buffer-gas-loaded magnetic traps and identify a loss mechanism based on Landau-Zener transitions arising from the anisotropic hyperfine interaction. Our results show that the recently o...

Collisional quenching of internally excited atoms and molecules at cold and ultracold temperatures

Quantum mechanical calculations of collisional quenching cross sections and rate coefficients for various internally excited atoms and molecules at cold and ultracold temperatures are presented. The efficiencies of relaxation for vibrationally, rotationally, and electronically excited states are given and in each case the dominant decay mechanisms are discussed.
