Cross-talk in Nerve Root Stimulator Implants
نویسنده
چکیده
Implanted stimulators of motor nerve roots have been used for functional restoration in paraplegia since many years. While the high root density of the cauda equina limits the surgery to one field, it also presents the problem of cross-talk stimulation: unwanted activation of a root lying near an active set of electrodes. The Lumbar Anterior Root Stimulator Implant (LARSI) did exhibit cross-talk, and we have hypothesized that this is because the anodes in all the slots were connected together, causing virtual cathodes outside the active slot. In this paper, we report in vitro experiments suggesting that, with a better design, we can improve the cross-talk ratio (out-of-slot threshold/in-slot threshold) from <10 to >80.

Abstract Aims and Background: New standards have been developed for pain management in the recent years, and many focused on perioperative pain management to reduce complications during and after the surgery. This study has been designed to determine the impact of ultrasonography on the onset and duration of the analgesia by femoral nerve block after isolated femoral fracture surgery. Ma...

Noninvasive functional magnetic stimulation (FMS) of the sacral nerve roots can activate gluteal muscles. We propose the use of sacral anterior root stimulator (SARS) implants to prevent ischial pressure ulcers in the spinal cord injury (SCI) population. In this study, we (1) investigated the acute effects of sacral FMS on ischial pressure, skin blood content, and oxygenation changes in people ...

OBJECTIVE To observe the effects of stimulation of the sacral anterior roots on anorectal and low colonic pressures and to programme implanted stimulators to produce defecation. DESIGN Prospective study of 12 consecutive patients. SETTING Spinal injuries unit and university gastrointestinal physiology department. PATIENTS 12 Patients with complete supraconal spinal cord lesions. Their inj...
متن کاملA systematic method to quantify the presence of cross-talk in stimulus-evoked EMG responses: implications for TMS studies.
Surface electromyography (EMG) responses to noninvasive nerve and brain stimulation are routinely used to provide insight into neural function in humans. However, this could lead to erroneous conclusions if evoked EMG responses contain significant contributions from neighboring muscles (i.e., due to "cross-talk"). We addressed this issue with a simple nerve stimulation method to provide quantit...
متن کاملPressure changes under the ischial tuberosities of seated individuals during sacral nerve root stimulation.
Neuromuscular stimulation via the sacral nerve roots is proposed for prevention of ischial pressure ulcers following a spinal cord injury (SCI). Acute effects of sacral functional magnetic stimulation (FMS) on seat interface pressure changes were investigated in five nondisabled volunteers. Similar effects were demonstrated with functional electrical stimulation in people with SCI who used a sa...
