A fuzzy classi® cation of sub-urban land cover from remotely sensed imagery

چکیده
Fuzzy methods in remote sensing have received growing interest for their particular value in situations where the geographical phenomena are inherently fuzzy. A fuzzy approach is investigated for the classi® cation of sub-urban land cover from remote sensing imagery and the evaluation of classi® cation accuracy. Under the fuzzy strategy, fuzziness, intrinsic to both remotely sensed data and ground data, is accommodated and usefully explored. For comparative purposes, hard and fuzzy classi® cations were produced and tested using hard and fuzzy evaluation techniques. The results show that the fuzzy approach holds advantages over both conventional hard methods and partially fuzzy approaches, in which fuzziness in only the remotely sensed imagery is accommodated. It was found that Kappa coe cients were more than doubled when applying the fuzzy evaluation technique as opposed to the hard evaluation technique. Furthermore, the fuzzy approach paves the way towards an integrated handling of remotely sensed data and other spatial data.

Estimation of sub-pixel land cover composition in the presence of untrained classes
Remotely sensed data are an attractive source of land cover data over a wide range of spatial and temporal scales. The realisation of the full potential of remote sensing as a source of land cover data is, however, restricted by numerous factors. One commonly encountered problem is the presence of mixed pixels, which cannot be appropriately accommodated in conventional image classi®cation techn...

متن کاملUrban Land Use Classes with Fuzzy Membership and Classification Based on Integration of Remote Sensing and Gis
Urban land use classification from remotely sensed images has drawn great attention in the past decades. Most researchers derive land use data from remotely sensed images alone, but the results are not quite satisfying for detecting detailed land use classes in urban areas. Fuzzy urban land use classes proposed here consist of a number of fuzzy memberships that offer direct links to findings fr...

Traditional spectral classi®cation of remotely sensed images applied on a pixel-by-pixel basis ignores the potentially useful spatial information between the values of proximate pixels. For some 30 years the spatial information inherent in remotely sensed images has been employed, albeit by a limited number of researchers, to enhance spectral classi®cation. This has been achieved primarily by ®...
