Reverse correlation in neurophysiology

چکیده
This article presents a review of reverse correlation in neurophysiology. We discuss the basis of reverse correlation in linear transducers and in spiking neurons. The application of reverse correlation to measure the receptive fields of visual neurons using white noise and m-sequences, and classical findings about spatial and color processing in the cortex resulting from such measurements, are emphasized. Finally, we describe new developments in reverse correlation, including “sub-space” and categorical reverse-correlation. Recent results obtained by applying such methods in the orientation, spatial-frequency and Fourier domains have revealed the importance of cortical inhibition in the establishment of sharp tuning selectivity in single neurons. © 2004 Cognitive Science Society, Inc. Accuracy of subspace mapping of spatiotemporal frequency domain visual receptive fields.
Orientation and spatial frequency selectivities are fundamental properties of cells in the early visual cortex. Although they are customarily tested with drifting sinusoidal gratings, a recently developed subspace reverse correlation method may be a better replacement for obtaining a selectivity map in a joint orientation and spatial frequency domain at higher resolution efficiently. These two ...
متن کاملSodium along with low-threshold potassium currents enhance coincidence detection of subthreshold noisy signals in MSO neurons.
Voltage-dependent membrane conductances support specific neurophysiological properties. To investigate the mechanisms of coincidence detection, we activated gerbil medial superior olivary (MSO) neurons with dynamic current-clamp stimuli in vitro. Spike-triggered reverse-correlation analysis for injected current was used to evaluate the integration of subthreshold noisy signals. Consistent with ...
متن کاملPerceptual fields reveal previously hidden dynamics of human visual motion sensitivity.
Motion sensitivity is a fundamental property of human vision. Although its neural correlates are normally only directly accessible with neurophysiological approaches, Neri (Neri P. J Neurosci 34: 8449-8491, 2014) proposed psychophysical reverse correlation to derive perceptual fields, revealing previously unseen dynamics of human motion detection. In this Neuro Forum, these key findings are dis...
متن کاملTemporal dynamics of figure-ground segregation in human vision.
The segregation of figure from ground is arguably one of the most fundamental operations in human vision. Neural signals reflecting this operation appear in cortex as early as 50 ms and as late as 300 ms after presentation of a visual stimulus, but it is not known when these signals are used by the brain to construct the percepts of figure and ground. We used psychophysical reverse correlation ...
متن کاملShort-latency fixational saccades induced by luminance increments.
We investigated the effect of peripheral visual stimulation on small-amplitude saccades that occur naturally during fixation. Two macaque monkeys were rewarded for fixating while a colorful stimulus flickered randomly in the periphery. Reverse correlation revealed a lawful relationship between the stimulus sequence and saccade occurrences: on average, a transient increase in stimulus intensity ...
