The Lcls-ii Injector Design*

چکیده
The new LCLS-II project will construct a 4 GeV continuous wave (CW) superconducting linear accelerator to simultaneously feed two undulators which will cover the spectral ranges 0.2-1.2 keV and 1-5 keV, respectively. The injector must provide up to 300 pC/bunch with a normalized emittance < 0.6 m and peak current > 30 A at up to 1 MHz repetition rate. An electron gun with the required brightness at such high repetition rate has not yet been demonstrated. However, several different options have been explored with results that meet or exceed the performance requirements of LCLS-II. The available technologies for high repetition-rate guns, and the need to keep dark current within acceptable values, limit the accelerating gradient in the electron gun. We propose a CW normal conducting low frequency RF gun for the electron source due to a combination of the simplicity of operation and the highest achieved gradient in a CW gun, potentially allowing for lower beam emittances. The high gradient is especially significant at the 300 pC/bunch charge where beam quality can suffer due to space charge. This paper describes the design challenges and presents our solutions for the LCLS-II injector.

New Optimization for the Lcls Photo-injector
A new parameter optimization of the LCLS photo-injector beamline minimizing the transverse emittance has been established for operating the gun at 120MV/m. The design goals of the LCLS photo-injector beamline are to provide a 150 MeV, 10ps FWHM, 1nC bunch at 120Hz with less than 1.2 mm.mrad for the projected emittance and less than 1 mm.mrad for the slice emittance for 80 slices out of 100. The...
متن کاملTolerances for magnetic fields in the Gun-To-Linac region of the LCLS Injector
In this technical note, we review the computations which led to the tolerances on residual quadrupole field terms in the magnets of the Gun-To-Linac region of the LCLS Injector. If the dipole terms can be cancelled by appropriately steering the beam, the quadrupole term damages the focusing scheme and generates an asymmetry in the horizontal and vertical emittances. Quadrupole terms deteriorate...
متن کاملRf Design for the Linac Coherent Light Source (lcls) Injector*
The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) will be the world’s first x-ray free electron laser, and the successful operation of this very shortwavelength FEL will require excellent beam quality from its electron source. Therefore a critical component is the RF photocathode injector. This paper describes the design issues of the LCLS RF gun and accelerator structures. The injector consists of a 1.6 ...

The particle-pushing PARMELA was used to design the photo-injector beamline of the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) to be built at SLAC in 2005. PARMELA predicts that projected emittances smaller than 1.2 mm.mrad and slice emittance smaller than 1.0 mm.mrad will be achievable for 1nC, 10ps electron bunches with an S-band RF gun and an emittance compensating system. To benchmark PARMELA, compa...
متن کاملExperimental Studies with Spatial Gaussian-cut Laser for the Lcls Photocathode Gun*
To simplify the LCLS operation and further enhance the injector performances, we are evaluating the various parameters including the photocathode drive laser system. Extensive simulations show that both the projected and time-sliced emittances with spatial Gaussian profiles having reasonable tail-cut are better than those with uniform one. The simulated results are also supported by theoretical...
