چکیده

• The likely consequences of future high levels of atmospheric CO 2 concentration on wheat ( Triticum aestivum L.) grain nutritional and baking quality were determined. • Two free-air CO 2 enrichment (FACE; 550 mmol mol − 1 ) experiments were conducted at ample (Wet) and limiting (Dry) levels of irrigation, and a further two experiments at ample (High-N) and limiting (Low-N) nitrogen concentrations. Harvested grain samples were subjected to a battery of nutritional and bread-making quality tests. • The Dry treatment improved grain quality slightly (protein +2%; bread loaf volume +3%). By contrast, Low-N decreased quality drastically (protein − 36%; loaf volume − 26%). At ample water and N, FACE decreased quality slightly (protein − 5%; loaf volume − 2%) in the irrigation experiments and there was no change in the nitrogen experiments. At Low-N, FACE tended to make the deleterious effects of Low-N worse (protein − 33% and − 39%, at ambient CO 2 and FACE, respectively; loaf volume − 22% and − 29% at ambient CO 2 and FACE, respectively). • The data suggest that future elevated CO 2 concentrations will exacerbate the deleterious effects of low soil nitrogen on grain quality, but with ample nitrogen fertilizer, the effects will be minor.

The impact of atmospheric temperature and soil nitrogen on some physiological traits and dry matter accumulation of wheat (Triticum aestivum cv. Bahar)

Wheat is the most important cereal crop in the world as well as in Iran. The studies related to the effects of global climate change on wheat production usually assess the impact of changes in atmospheric CO2 concentration and temperature on growth and yield. On the other hand, nitrogen is the most crucial plant nutrient for crop production and the proper management and improving the utilizatio...

Corrigendum: Soil warming enhances the hidden shift of elemental stoichiometry by elevated CO2 in wheat

Increase in atmospheric CO2 concentration ([CO2]) and associated soil warming along with global climate change are expected to have large impacts on grain mineral nutrition in wheat. The effects of CO2 elevation (700 μmol l(-1)) and soil warming (+2.4 °C) on K, Ca and Mg concentrations in the xylem sap and their partitioning in different organs of wheat plant during grain filling were investiga...

Effects of elevated atmospheric CO2 and drought stress on individual grain filling rates and durations of the main stem in spring wheat

Rate and duration of individual grain growth determine final kernel weight and are influenced by environmental factors. The objectives of this research were to assess the effects of elevated CO2 and drought stress on the grain filling rate and duration, and the weight of individual kernels. Spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) was grown in a free air CO2 enrichment (FACE) system on the demonstra...

Effect of the timing of nitrogen fertilizer application on grain yield and quality of bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars under terminal drought stress conditions

To investigate the effect of  the timing of nitrogen fertilizer application on grain yield and quality of bread wheat cultivars under terminal drought stress conditions, two field experiments were conducted at Agricultural Research Station of Miandoab in West Azerbaijan, Iran, in 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 cropping seasons. Experimental treatments were arranged as split plot factorial in randomiz...
