Design considerations when transitioning from paper case report forms (CRFS) to electronic data capture (EDC)

چکیده
Background ICR-CTSU introduced EDC in 2012; this necessitated a revision of the systems and processes implemented for paper CRFs. Traditionally sites manually completed, signed and posted CRFs to ICR-CTSU. Once received, CRFs were tracked and transcribed onto the study database by a member of the ICR-CTSU trial team. Databases contained multiple complex validations to aid central data management. Data queries were raised by ICR-CTSU and sent to the sites by post. These processes had to be revised when EDC was introduced and alteration of CRF and database design was integral to this.

Integrated Data Management for Clinical Studies: Automatic Transformation of Data Models with Semantic Annotations for Principal Investigators, Data Managers and Statisticians
Design, execution and analysis of clinical studies involves several stakeholders with different professional backgrounds. Typically, principle investigators are familiar with standard office tools, data managers apply electronic data capture (EDC) systems and statisticians work with statistics software. Case report forms (CRFs) specify the data model of study subjects, evolve over time and cons...
متن کاملQuantifying Data Quality for Clinical Trials Using Electronic Data Capture
BACKGROUND Historically, only partial assessments of data quality have been performed in clinical trials, for which the most common method of measuring database error rates has been to compare the case report form (CRF) to database entries and count discrepancies. Importantly, errors arising from medical record abstraction and transcription are rarely evaluated as part of such quality assessmen...
متن کاملComparison of Electronic Data Capture (EDC) with the Standard Data Capture Method for Clinical Trial Data
BACKGROUND Traditionally, clinical research studies rely on collecting data with case report forms, which are subsequently entered into a database to create electronic records. Although well established, this method is time-consuming and error-prone. This study compares four electronic data capture (EDC) methods with the conventional approach with respect to duration of data capture and accurac...
متن کاملImplementing electronic data capture (EDC) training for site staff
Challenges Training of site staff on EDC systems is essential to ensure data quality and returns are maximised. Guidance notes are issued to support standardised completion of case report forms. However, due to the technical nature of EDC, guidance notes alone provide insufficient support for most site staff. Provision of effective, consistent and timely EDC training across a trial’s lifespan i...
متن کاملImplementing electronic data capture at a well-established health and demographic surveillance site in rural northern Malawi
This article aims to assess multiple issues of resources, staffing, local opinion, data quality, cost, and security while transitioning to electronic data collection (EDC) at a long-running community research site in northern Malawi. Levels of missing and error fields, delay from data collection to availability, and average number of interviews per day were compared between EDC and paper in a c...
