The analysis of speech in different temporal integration windows: cerebral lateralization as 'asymmetric sampling in time'

چکیده

The asymmetric sampling in time (AST) hypothesis developed here provides a framework for understanding a range of psychophysical and neuropsychological data on speech perception in the context of a revised cortical functional anatomic model. The AST model is motivated by observations from psychophysics and cognitive neuroscience that speak to the fractionation of auditory processing, in general, and speech perception, in particular. Building on the observations (1) that the speech signal contains more than one time scale relevant to auditory cognition (e.g. time scales commensurate with processing formant transitions versus scales commensurate with syllabicity and intonation contours), and (2) that speech perception is mediated by both left and right auditory cortices, AST suggests a time-based perspective that maintains anatomic symmetry while permitting functional asymmetry. AST proposes that the input speech signal has a neural representation that is bilaterally symmetric at an early representational level. Beyond the initial representation, however, the signal is elaborated asymmetrically in the time domain: left auditory areas preferentially extract information from short ( 20–40 ms) temporal integration windows. The right hemisphere homologues preferentially extract information from long ( 150–250 ms) integration windows. It is suggested that temporal integration is reflected as oscillatory neuronal activity in different frequency bands (gamma, theta). 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Cortical Oscillations in Auditory Perception and Speech: Evidence for Two Temporal Windows in Human Auditory Cortex

Natural sounds, including vocal communication sounds, contain critical information at multiple time scales. Two essential temporal modulation rates in speech have been argued to be in the low gamma band (∼20-80 ms duration information) and the theta band (∼150-300 ms), corresponding to segmental and diphonic versus syllabic modulation rates, respectively. It has been hypothesized that auditory ...

The analysis of pure word deafness (PWD) suggests that speech perception, construed as the integration of acoustic information to yield representations that enter into the linguistic computational system, (i) is separable in a modular sense from other aspects of auditory cognition and (ii) is mediated by the posterior superior temporal cortex in both hemispheres. PWD data are consistent with ne...

Proper integration time of polarization signals of internetwork regions using Sunrise/IMaX data

Distribution of magnetic fields in the quiet-Sun internetwork areas has been affected by weak polarization (in particular Stokes Q and U) signals. To improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the weak polarization signals, several approaches, including temporal integrations, have been proposed in the literature. In this study, we aim to investigate a proper temporal-integration time with which...

شبکه عصبی پیچشی با پنجره‌های قابل تطبیق برای بازشناسی گفتار

Although, speech recognition systems are widely used and their accuracies are continuously increased, there is a considerable performance gap between their accuracies and human recognition ability. This is partially due to high speaker variations in speech signal. Deep neural networks are among the best tools for acoustic modeling. Recently, using hybrid deep neural network and hidden Markov mo...

Temporal Relationship of Top-down and Bottom-up Processing in Tone Perception

Both the top-down and bottom-up processing are identified in language comprehension: the top-down processing depends on previous language experience and the bottom-up processing depends on instant language inputs. In speech perception, both types of processing are needed while perceiving pitch variations as lexical tones. In this paper, based on three ERP experiments, we propose a temporal mode...
