چکیده

In previous work, Gardiner et al. (1999) found evidence for a discrepancy between the Teff obtained from Balmer lines with that from photometry and fundamental values for A-type stars. An investigation into this anomaly is presented using Balmer line profiles of stars in binary system with fundamental values of both Teff and log g. A revision of the fundamental parameters for binary systems given by Smalley & Dworetsky (1995) is also presented. The Teff obtained by fitting Hα and Hβ line profiles is compared to the fundamental values and those obtained from uvby photometry. We find that the discrepancy found by Gardiner et al. (1999) for stars in the range 7000 K <∼ Teff <∼ 9000 K is no longer evident.

Abnormal Balmer Profiles

The profiles of Hα in a number of cool Ap stars are anomalous. Broad wings, indicative of temperatures in the range 7000-8000K end abruptly in narrow cores. The widths of these cores are compatible with those of dwarfs with temperatures of 6000K or lower. This profile has been known for Przybylski’s star, but it is seen in other cool Ap’s. The Hβ profile in several of these stars shows a simila...

Some Aspects of the calculation of Balmer lines in the sun and stars

We compare the results of Balmer-line calculations using recent theory and improved computational algorithms with those from the widely-used SYNTHE and BALMER9 routines. The resulting profiles are mostly indistinguishable. Good fits to the normalized solar Balmer lines Hα through Hδ are obtained (apart from the cores) using the recent unified-broadening calculations by Barklem and his coworkers...

Testing convection theories using Balmer line profiles of A , F , and G stars ?

We consider the effects of convection on the Balmer line profiles (Hα and Hβ) of A, F, and G stars. The standard mixing-length theory (MLT) atlas9 models of Kurucz (1993), with and without overshooting, are compared toatlas9models based on the turbulent convection theory proposed by Canuto & Mazzitelli (1991, 1992) and implemented by Kupka (1996), and the improved version of this model proposed...

Using Balmer line profiles to investigate convection in A and F stars

Balmer lines are an important diagnostic of stellar atmospheric structure, since they are formed at a wide range of depths within the atmosphere. The different Balmer lines are formed at slightly different depths making them useful atmospheric diagnostics. The low sensitivity to surface gravity for stars cooler than ∼8000 K makes them excellent diagnostics in the treatment of atmospheric convec...

Irradiated red giant atmospheres in S-type symbiotic stars

We present non-LTE calculations for an expanding red giant’s atmosphere ionized from the outside by the radiation of a nearby hot radiation source. We show that the hydrogen emission lines emerge from a narrow transition zone where hydrogen changes from ionized to neutral. In this region the Balmer lines are optically thick, and their profiles crucially depend on the magnitude of optical thickn...
