Wing (eds.), Genetics and Genomics of Rice, Plant Genetics and Genomics: Crops and Models 5, DOI 10.1007/978-1-4614-7903-1_2, © Springer Science+Business Media New York 2014 The wild species of the genus Oryza serve as a virtually untapped reservoir of genetic diversity that can be used to improve the world’s most important food crop—rice. The genus is composed of two domesticated ( O . sativa and O . glaberrima ) and 22 wild species [ 68 ] and represents between 15 and 25 million years of evolutionary diversifi cation. In this chapter we will describe the current status of the genetic and genomic applications of the genus Oryza toward the penultimate goal of helping to solve the 9 billion people question—i.e., how can we grow enough food to feed more than 9 billion human inhabitants under 40 years [ 52 ]? 1 The Genus Oryza : Broadening the Gene Pool of Rice—Exploitation of Diversity of the Wild Species Germplasm

Broadening Gene Pool of Rice for Resistance to Biotic Stresses Through Wide Hybridization

Variability in the cultivated germplasm for economic traits such as resistance to rice tungro virus, sheathblight, yellow stem borer, drought and salt tolerance is limited. This necessitated search for the genes in secondary and tertiary gene pool of genus Oryza. Fortunately, wild species are an important reservoir ofuseful genes for resistance to major disease, pest and tolerance t...

Population genomics identifies the origin and signatures of selection of Korean weedy rice

Weedy rice is the same biological species as cultivated rice (Oryza sativa); it is also a noxious weed infesting rice fields worldwide. Its formation and population-selective or -adaptive signatures are poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the phylogenetics, population structure and signatures of selection of Korean weedy rice by determining the whole genomes of 30 weedy rice, 30 l...

Development in Rice Genome Research Based on Accurate Genome Sequence

Rice is one of the most important crops in the world. Although genetic improvement is a key technology for the acceleration of rice breeding, a lack of genome information had restricted efforts in molecular-based breeding until the completion of the high-quality rice genome sequence, which opened new opportunities for research in various areas of genomics. The syntenic relationship of the rice ...

The Rice Genome Knowledgebase (RGKbase): an annotation database for rice comparative genomics and evolutionary biology

Over the past 10 years, genomes of cultivated rice cultivars and their wild counterparts have been sequenced although most efforts are focused on genome assembly and annotation of two major cultivated rice (Oryza sativa L.) subspecies, 93-11 (indica) and Nipponbare (japonica). To integrate information from genome assemblies and annotations for better analysis and application, we now introduce a...

Dynamic Nucleotide-Binding Site and Leucine-Rich Repeat-Encoding Genes in the Grass Family1[C][W][OA]

The proper use of resistance genes (R genes) requires a comprehensive understanding of their genomics and evolution. We analyzed genes encoding nucleotide-binding sites and leucine-rich repeats in the genomes of rice (Oryza sativa), maize (Zea mays), sorghum (Sorghum bicolor), and Brachypodium distachyon. Frequent deletions and translocations of R genes generated prevalent presence/absence poly...
