A Quantitative Assessment of Spermatozoan Morphology in Nutricola confusa and Nutricola tantilla (Bivalvia: Veneridae)
نویسندگان
چکیده
The brooding bivalves, Nutricola tantilla and N. confusa overlap in their geographic distributions, habitats, and modes and timing of reproduction. Based on previous studies we infer that males of both species release spermatozoa into the water column; while females retain developing embryos in a brood chamber. Females release fully formed juveniles and there is no pelagic larval stage. We hypothesized that the muco-ciliary processes of particle selection and retention may act on differences in sperm morphology and contribute to reproductive isolation. We extracted sperm cells from both species and quantified nine linear measurements: the lengths of the acrosome, nuclear, midpiece and tail regions, and five different width measurements. We found significant differences in the lengths of the acrosome, midpiece, and tail. We also found that N. confusa produces dimorphic sperm and this is the first report of sperm dimorphism in the Veneroidea. Despite the significant differences in lengths, it is likely that other prezygotic mechanisms are responsible for reproductive isolation.

Impacts of habitat features and predation on distributions of mudflat clams
Though the congeners Nutricola (=Transennella) confusa and Nutricola tantilla occupy an important ecological niche on mudflats, there is little published information concerning their population dynamics. We sought to determine what causational factors influence shifts in the relative distributions of these clams. Twelve cores were taken from Westside Park in Bodega Bay Harbor, California, in ar...
متن کاملThe Impacts of a Nonindigenous Marine Predator in a California Bay
Coastal marine ecosystems worldwide are being altered rapidly by the invasion of nonindigenous species. Unlike terrestrial and freshwater systems, the impacts of an invading species have never been quantified on multiple trophic levels for a marine food web. We measured the impact of the nonindigenous green crab, Carcinus maenas, on a coastal marine food web in central California and found that...
متن کاملA new monorchiid cercaria (Digenea) parasitising the purple clam Amiantis purpurata (Bivalvia: Veneridae) in the Southwest Atlantic Ocean, with notes on its gonadal effect.
An unnamed microcercous cercaria (Digenea: Monorchiidae), a parasite of Amiantis purpurata (Lamarck, 1818) (Bivalvia: Veneridae) and its corresponding metacercaria from the province of Buenos Aires and the Patagonian coast of the Southwest Atlantic Ocean, are described. The cercaria described in this paper differs from the three other monorchiid microcercous cercariae, i.e., Lasiotocus minutus ...
متن کاملEndogenous circatidal rhythm in the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum (Bivalvia: Veneridae)
Manila clams, Ruditapes philippinarum, removed from their natural environment and maintained for 9 weeks in continuously immersed conditions exhibited a clear endogenous circatidal rhythm in oxygen consumption. The clams exhibited a semidiurnal rhythmicity in oxygen consumption after showing a diurnal pattern in the ®rst few days (5 to 7 d) of the experiment. The results of the present study in...
متن کاملIndirect Evidence on Sex Reversal of Sinonovacula constricta (Bivalvia: Euheterodonta) and Gomphina veneriformis (Bivalvia: Veneridae)
This study attempts to propose the possibility of the sex reversal in Sinonovacula constricta and Gomphina veneriformis by confirming the changes in the sex ratio with the shell length in the same population level. For analysis of sex ratio, 100 individuals of S. constricta (SL 26.5-95.0 mm) and 2385 individuals of G. veneriformis (SL 15.1-60.1 mm) were used. Sex was analyzed histologically. Bo...
