An optical method for the detection of sea lice, Lepeophtheirus salmonis

چکیده

Developments towards a novel video camera based system for estimating the sea lice burden of freely swimming salmon are reported. The spectral reflectance of sea lice and salmon skin were measured over the wavelength range 400–1100 nm. Canonical variate analysis was then used to identify a combination of reflectances that maximises the differences between skin and sea lice. This is shown to provide good discrimination when the lice are attached to the lighter underside of the fish and a degree of discrimination when the lice are attached to the darker areas. The results of this analysis were used to develop a simple video based discrimination system. An image of the salmon is synthesised from the ratio of grey levels of images taken through narrow band pass filters at wavelengths of 700 and 800 nm. This enhances the visibility of the lice and suppresses variations in the skin colour. Further development of this technique could lead to an automated passive system for estimating lice burden. © 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. www.elsevier.nl/locate/aqua-online

Use of agent-based modelling to predict benefits of cleaner fish in controlling sea lice, Lepeophtheirus salmonis, infestations on farmed Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L.

Sea lice, Lepeophtheirus salmonis, are ectoparasites of farmed and wild salmonids. Infestations can result in significant morbidity and mortality of hosts in addition to being costly to control. Integrated pest management programmes have been developed to manage infestations, and in some salmon farming areas, these programmes include the use of wrasse. Wrasse prey upon the parasitic life stages...

Multivariate evaluation of the effectiveness of treatment efficacy of cypermethrin against sea lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar)

BACKGROUND The sea louse Lepeophtheirus salmonis is the most important ectoparasite of farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) in Norwegian aquaculture. Control of sea lice is primarily dependent on the use of delousing chemotherapeutants, which are both expensive, and toxic to other wildlife. The method most commonly used for monitoring treatment effectiveness relies on measuring the percentage r...

The control of sea lice in Atlantic salmon by selective breeding

Sea lice threaten the welfare of farmed Atlantic salmon and the sustainability of fish farming across the world. Chemical treatments are the major method of control but drug resistance means that alternatives are urgently needed. Selective breeding can be a cheap and effective alternative. Here, we combine experimental trials and diagnostics to provide a practical protocol for quantifying resis...

The effect of sea lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) on juvenile pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) swimming endurance

The swimming endurance of naturally and experimentally infected juvenile pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) was measured to determine the effects of sea lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis). Salmon naturally infected with adult male and preadult stage lice did not appear to have a reduced swim performance, but when experimentally infected with adult female lice, juvenile salmon showed a reduced abi...

The Efficacy of Emamectin Benzoate against Infestations of Lepeophtheirus salmonis on Farmed Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar L) in Scotland, 2002–2006

BACKGROUND Infestations of the parasitic copepod Lepeophtheirus salmonis, commonly referred to as sea lice, represent a major challenge to commercial salmon aquaculture. Dependence on a limited number of theraputants to control such infestations has led to concerns of reduced sensitivity in some sea lice populations. This study investigates trends in the efficacy of the in-feed treatment emamec...
