Serum HDL, LDL and total cholesterol in patients with late-life onset of Alzheimer's disease versus vascular dementia.

چکیده
Patients with cerebrovascular risk factors are nowadays recognized as being at an increased risk of developing cognitive decline of both types. In this pilot study, we evaluated the levels of cholesterol (total, HDL, LDL) in patients with both vascular dementia (VD) and Alzheimer's type of dementia (AD). Cognitive decline was assessed using Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) as a standardized method. The study included 66 patients diagnosed with dementia. AD was diagnosed in 43 patients (22 male and 21 female) mean age (+/- SD) 72.79 +/- 8.19 years and VD in 23 patients (mean age +/- SD, 77.43 +/- 7.58 years). In AD group, 18 patients had cholesterol values within the normal range, whereas 25 patients had elevated levels of cholesterol. The mean value of total plasma cholesterol was 5.39 (SD = 1.05), LDL cholesterol 3.33 (SD = 0.95) and HDL cholesterol 1.41 (SD = 0.34). In VD group, 11 patients had cholesterol values within the normal range, whereas 12 patients had elevated levels of cholesterol. In this group, the mean value of total plasma cholesterol was 5.78 (SD = 1.06), HDL cholesterol 1.44 (SD = 0.57) and LDL cholesterol 3.72 (SD = 0.85). Total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and HDL cholesterol levels were higher in the group of patients with VD, however, the difference was not statistically significant.

Updating the Evidence on the Association between Serum Cholesterol and Risk of Late-Life Dementia: Review and Meta-Analysis
BACKGROUND Cohort studies have reported that midlife high total serum cholesterol (TC) is associated with increased risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD) in late-life but findings have been based on few studies and previous reviews have been limited by a lack of compatible data. OBJECTIVE We synthesized all high quality data from cohort studies reporting on the association between total serum chol...
متن کاملDecreased serum lipids in patients with probable Alzheimer's disease.
Alzheimer;s disease (AD) is a multifactorial disease but its aetiology and pathophisiology are still not fully understood. Epidemiologic studies examining the association between lipids and dementia have reported conflicting results. High total cholesterol has been associated with both an increased, and decreased, risk of AD and/or vascular dementia (VAD), whereas other studies found no associa...
متن کاملThe role of genetics in alzheimer’s disease
Alzheimer's disease is a progressive neurological disorder that causes the brain to shrink (atrophy) and brain cells die. Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia and causes a decrease in thinking skills and social behaviors. Alzheimer's disease is more common in people over 65 years old. The risk of developing Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia increases with age,...
متن کاملTHE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN OXIDATIVE STRESS AND THE ONSET OF CORONARY ARTERY DISEASE
Oxidation of low density lipoprotein (LDL) particles plays a key role in the etiology of atherosclerosis and coronary artery disease (CAD). Oxidative stress enhances the likelihood of LDL oxidation and atherosclerotic plaque development. Paraoxonase (PONI) is an enzyme associated with HDL that metabolizes organophosphates and has antioxidant activity. In order to investigate the relationsh...
