Filled pauses in User-generated Content are Words with Extra-propositional Meaning

چکیده

In this paper, we present a corpus study investigating the use of the fillers äh (uh) and ähm (uhm) in informal spoken German youth language and in written text from social media. Our study shows that filled pauses occur in both corpora as markers of hesitations, corrections, repetitions and unfinished sentences, and that the form as well as the type of the fillers are distributed similarly in both registers. We present an analysis of fillers in written microblogs, illustrating that äh and ähm are used intentionally and can add a subtext to the message that is understandable to both author and reader. We thus argue that filled pauses in user-generated content from social media are words with extrapropositional meaning.

Disfluencies as Extra-Propositional Indicators of Cognitive Processing

We explore filled pause usage in spontaneous medical narration. Expert physicians viewed images of dermatological conditions and provided a description while working toward a diagnosis. The narratives were analyzed for differences in filled pauses used by attending (experienced) and resident (in-training) physicians and by male and female physicians. Attending physicians described more and used...

Detection of filled pauses in spontaneous conversational speech

Most automatic speech recognition work has concentrated on read speech, whose acoustic aspects differ significantly from speech found in actual dialogues. A primary difference between read speech and spontaneous speech concerns a high rate of disfluencies (e.g., filled pauses, repetitions, repairs, false starts). Filled pauses (e.g., “uh,” “um”), unlike silences, resemble phones as part of word...

Detecting Filled Pauses in Tutorial Dialogs

As dialog systems become more capable, users tend to talk more spontaneously and less formally. Spontaneous speech includes features which convey information about the user’s state. In particular, filled pauses, such as um and uh, can indicate that the user is having trouble, wants more time, wants to hold the floor, or is uncertain. In this paper we present a first study of the acoustic charac...

Enhancing Synthetic Speech with Filled Pauses

Filled pauses are generally seen as disfluency. Showing that they can play a positive role in computer generated speech is the purpose of this paper. Details about the causes, variation in pronunciation and syntactic location are acquired through a corpus analysis. This knowledge is then used in an experiment conducted to test positive effects of filled pauses in computer generated speech on li...

Effects of open and directed prompts on filled pauses and utterance production

This paper describes an experiment where open and directed prompts were alternated when collecting speech data for the deployment of a call-routing application. The experiment tested whether open and directed prompts resulted in any differences with respect to the filled pauses exhibited by the callers, which is interesting in the light of the “many-options” hypothesis of filled pause productio...
