Effects of the Intestinal Nematode Trichostrongylus Colubriformis on Ruminal Acetate Metabolism in Young Sheep

چکیده

Rates of production and oxidation of ruminal acetate were measured in young sheep (1) infected with T. colubriformis; (2) kept worm-free and pair-fed to (1); and (3) kept worm-free and given feed ad lib. Both voluntary food consumption and the production rate of acetate were reduced by up to 76 per cent in sheep on treatment (1) compared with (3). Acetate production rate was 30 per cent lower in infected than in pair-fed sheep, indicating there was an effect of the parasite on ruminal fermentation additional to the effects of reduced feed intake. The percentage contribution of acetate to blood CO2 was lower in infected than in pair-fed animals. Rates of irreversible CO2 loss from blood suggested that, apart from a reduction associated with decreased feed intake, the energy expenditure of sheep was not markedly affected by the parasite.

Intraspecific Epitopic Variation in a Carbohydrate Antigen Exposed on the Surface of Trichostrongylus colubriformis Infective L3 Larvae

The carbohydrate larval antigen, CarLA, is present on the exposed surface of all strongylid nematode infective L3 larvae tested, and antibodies against CarLA can promote rapid immune rejection of incoming Trichostrongylus colubriformis larvae in sheep. A library of ovine recombinant single chain Fv (scFv) antibody fragments, displayed on phage, was prepared from B cell mRNA of field-immune shee...

Condensed tannins and gastro-intestinal parasites in sheep

As the effectiveness of current anthelmintic drenches is being reduced by the emergence of drench resistance and significant production losses may still occur as a result of continuing larval challenge, strategies for nematode control should focus on preventing the build-up of infective larvae on pasture rather than treating the infection. This paper reports the effects of condensed tannins (CT...

The prevalence of concurrent trypanosome and gastrointestinal nematode infections in west African dwarf sheep and goats in Nsukka area of eastern Nigeria.

The prevalence of concurrent nematode-trypanosome infections in traditionally reared West African Dwarf sheep and goats in eastern Nigeria was monitored over a 12-month period during 1987-1988. The most prevalent nematodes were Haemonchus contortus and Trichostrongylus colubriformis, which usually occurred together in all nematode infected animals. Their combined prevalence rates ranged from 90...
