The Mass Function of NGC 288
نویسنده
چکیده
We present NICMOS NIC3 observations of the Galactic globular cluster NGC288, taken South East at 2.4 times the cluster’s half-light radius in the J and H bands. We have detected the cluster main sequence down to J ≃ 25 and H ≃ 24. The corresponding luminosity function covers the range 3 < MH < 9 and peaks at MH ≃ 6.8. The theoretical tracks of Baraffe et al. (1997) at [Fe/H ] = −1.3 give a mass function which is best fitted by a log-normal distribution with characteristic mass of mc = 0.42M⊙ and a standard deviation σ = 0.35. This result is fully consistent with the global mass function derived by Paresce & De Marchi (2000) for a sample of 12 globular clusters with very different dynamical histories, thus confirming that near the cluster’s half-light radius the mass function appears “undistorted” by evaporation or tidal interactions with the Galaxy and should then reflect the initial mass function.

Age as the Second Parameter in Ngc 288/ngc 362? Ii. the Horizontal Branch Revisited
We revisit the “second parameter” pair of globular clusters NGC 288/NGC 362 on the basis of theoretical models for red giant branch (RGB) and horizontal branch (HB) stars. The results of the most extensive set of RGB/HB simulations computed so far for these clusters are presented for two different metallicities. Using several different analytical mass loss formulae for RGB stars, we derive rela...

We report on the Chandra X-ray Observatory observations of the globular cluster NGC 288. We detect four X-ray sources within the core radius and seven additional sources within the half-mass radius down to a limiting luminosity of LX = 7×1030 ergs s−1 (assuming cluster membership) in the 0.3–7 keV band. We also observed the cluster with the Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys and...

متن کاملX - Ray Observations of Globular Cluster
A ROSAT HRI X-ray image was obtained of the open globular cluster NGC 288, which is located near the South Galactic Pole. This is the first deep X-ray image of this system. We detect a Low Luminosity Globular Cluster X-ray source (LLGCX) RXJ005245.0−263449 with an X-ray luminosity of (5.5± 1.4)× 1032 ergs s−1 (0.1–2.0 keV), which is located very close to the cluster center. There is evidence fo...

High-resolution spectroscopic measurements of blue horizontal-branch stars in six metal-poor globular clusters —M3, M13, M15, M68, M92, and NGC 288 — reveal remarkable variations in photospheric composition and rotation velocity as a function of a star’s position along the horizontal branch. For the cooler stars (Teff < 11200 K), the derived abundances are in good agreement with the canonical c...
