A Test for Conformity in Voting Behavior
نویسنده
چکیده
Basic Assumptions. Conformity, as I use it here, is the situation when people are trying to act or look like one another. One sees this conformity everyday, in many areas of social life -in fashions, the names we give our children, the sports we play, the causes we support, and so on. Of course, there are always individuals who go against the grain and adopt less conformist or non-conforming behaviors; but these behaviors may also fall into certain distinct patterns. For example, most men wear ties of similar lengths and widths (which vary according to fashion), but some men persist in wearing bow ties. Some parents name their children Roxanne or Bud instead of perennial favorites like Jennifer or Michael. This division between those who conform with the majority and those who conform with minority types suggests that one might examine how conformist a society is through the relative proportions of people who opt for alternate styles or actions.
